Edgbaston Mill, Birmingham
Birmingham
Work has commenced on one of Birmingham’s biggest public squares as part of the creation of the £100m retail and leisure destination, Edgbaston Mill.
Situated opposite the world-famous Edgbaston Cricket Ground, the 20,000 sq ft square, being built by Fitzgerald Contractors Ltd, will front the scheme on to Edgbaston Road.
The 450,000 sq ft Edgbaston Mill development is being developed by Calthorpe Estates and Cordwell Leisure Developments. Plans for the scheme include 39,400 sq ft of retail and restaurants, 31,000 sq ft of leisure space, a 4,000 sq ft foodstore, 64,500 sq ft Grade A offices and a 190-bedroom hotel.
344 apartments are currently being developed by Redrow Homes to complement the scheme. The first phase is nearing completion with the first residents due to occupy the apartments in a few weeks. Work is due to begin on the commercial elements of the development later this year, with the scheme scheduled to be completed in phases from 2008.
Corby
Corby, already the base for national industrial and distribution companies such as Weetabix, Roquette, Matalan, Comet, Avon, Argos and Morrison, is about to see a growth in businesses with the development of Centrix Park, a 39-acre industrial and warehouse development being built by Wilson Bowden Developments.

The first phase of construction has already commenced on site. Alpha Court totals 61,115 sq ft of speculative development space presented in a row of two terraces. Each unit caters for between 3,950 – 10,025 sq ft and units can be combined dependent on local business requirements.
Alpha Court will be completed in December and infrastructure works are well underway.
Budworth Brown and DTZ are acting as marketing agents on behalf of Wilson Bowden Developments.
Birmingham
Chord Deeley has singed its first occupier at St Georges, the £160m mixed-use scheme in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter.
A £15m Ramada Encore hotel – the first in Birmingham – is to be developed on the corner of Icknield Street and Pope Street by joint venture partners Alfred McAlpine and New World Leisure, who have agreed to acquire a prominent site within Phase 1 of the development.
The proposed boutique-style budget hotel, which has been submitted for planning permission, will comprise 151 bedrooms housed in a 5,836 sq m (62,828 sq ft) building. A new 237 space multi-storey car park is planned next door.
Retail agents Wright Silverwood advise Chord Deeley on the land sale to Alfred McAlpine/New World Leisure.
Redditch
Construction work starts this month, on the second, speculative, phase of a new industrial park in Redditch, where all but one of the first phase units have been sold.
Target Park is a £12m scheme in Shawbank Road, Lakeside, and is a joint venture between Oakham Developments and Abacus Developments, the property investment and development arm of the Sir Robert McAlpine Group.
The first phase of 54,750 sq ft industrial and warehousing space has virtually all gone, to local, relocating companies, with just one 10,250 sq ft unit remaining, for sale or to lease. The second phase comprises a further six units of around 60,000 sq ft.
