Land sale poised to transform Bideford town centre 27th March 2012

East-the-Water Wharves off Barnstaple Street in Bideford is being marketed by Savills as a prime waterside development opportunity.

The site has been identified by Torridge District Council as a crucial component of Bideford’s regeneration strategy and provides an opportunity to transform the appearance of a landmark site. The Council’s priority for East-the-Water Wharves is to create a development that provides a new destination within the town centre that maximises its riverside aspect and public open space.

The recently endorsed Site Development Brief demonstrates the Council’s support for the redevelopment of this historic site and provides a framework for future redevelopment proposals.

Bideford is the administrative centre and largest town within the District of Torridge. The site is made up of Brunswick, Clarence and Queens Wharves and is located on the east side of the River Torridge, 500m from the town centre and 2.3km from the A39. The site is currently occupied by a local authority car park and a number of temporary and historic buildings.

Nick Jones from Savills in Exeter, who is marketing the site on behalf of Torridge District Council said: “The recently endorsed Site Development Brief supports the redevelopment of this strategic site for residential, retail, commercial and tourism related uses and we are seeking a developer who can fulfil this with an exciting mixed use scheme.

“With its central waterside location, the site has huge potential to transform the town, creating a new quarter for local people, tourists and businesses to enjoy.”

Councillor Barry Parsons, Leader of Torridge District Council, said: “Economic regeneration is one of the Council’s top priorities. The redevelopment of East-the-Water Wharves represents an outstanding opportunity to make a major contribution to the regeneration of Bideford by bringing significant benefits to the existing economy and transforming the appearance of the town centre. This project has the full support of the Council and we look forward to bringing it to fruition”

Savills is inviting expressions of interest for the site and will then ask a shortlist of interested parties to provide detailed proposals. For further information contact Nick Jones at Savills in Exeter on 01392 455 712.
