Planning consultancy Turley Associates have achieved what they believe is the first successful application for an office to residential conversion under the new General Permitted Development Order, which was introduced in May 2013.
St Helen's Council, Merseyside granted planning permission on 30 July for BPS Developments to convert Rexmore House, a redundant office building in St Helens into 21 one-bedroom and nine two-bedroom apartments.
Peter Rowe, a senior planner in the Manchester office of Turley Associates said: “We understand that while our application was not the first to be submitted under the General Permitted Development Order, we do believe it is the first to receive the green light.
“The promptness of the decision demonstrates that the new permitted development regime can work well and will contribute towards the Government’s objective to promote growth and significantly boost the supply of housing.”
Work to Rexmore House is expected to begin immediately.
