Students from Year Nine (age 13 – 14) were asked to think about a four-bedroom house design, which is sustainable and suited to modern lifestyles, based around a plot located within the regeneration of 12 acres of industrial buildings at Paintworks in Bristol’s creative district.

Four schools in the region stepped up to the challenge: Backwell School, Churchill Academy, Colston Girls School and St Mary Redcliffe and Temple, with a total of 24 entries received from young, aspiring designers.

Their designs went before a panel of judges selected from the property and construction industry, including Andrew Cox of Crest Nicholson, Ashley Nicholson from Verve Properties, Hilary Vaughan from Peter Evans Partnership; Richenda Oldham from Property News, Robert Delius from Stride Treglown architects and WiP South West and National University Award Winner, Charlotte Collins.

The overall winning entry was from a student at St Mary Redcliffe & Temple, Ewa Ozuch, who also wins a prize of a cheque for £100 for the school. Ewa had interpreted the brief extremely well and her design was very professional and impressed all the judges.

The following schools also had a Highly Commended team:

Backwell School – Highly Commended for Team Work
St Mary Redcliffe & Temple – Highly Commended for Imaginative Design

Each school winner and the two highly commendeds received prizes of i-Tunes vouchers.

One of the judges, Ashley Nicholson from Verve Properties, said: “The standard of the entries was very high so it was hard to select an overall winner. The students came up with some exciting and innovative ideas”.

WiP Chairman of the South West branch, Naomi Chesterman of Veale Wasborough Vizards, said: “We are always keen to promote property and construction careers to young people and experience has shown us that involving them in practical work like this, is one of the best ways to get them interested”.
