Former Somerset primary school sold to education specialists Explorium6th December 2013

A former primary school in Compton Dundon near Somerton, Somerset, has been bought by education specialists Explorium in a deal brokered by the Development and Consulting team at Colliers International working alongside Greenslade Taylor Hunt, acting on behalf of local Trustees and the Diocese of Bath & Wells.

Explorium has plans to provide supplementary education to children between the ages of 5-12 years from across the local area and will be operated as a social entrprise rather than a conventional school. They already have welcomed 24 children on board and will shortly be launching additional after school clubs.

Team head Chris Dawson from Colliers International said villagers would welcome the fact the 3,127 sq ft former school building will now continue in educational use. “Although the building would lend itself well to residential conversion, planning policy did not easily allow this and the sale should see the building in continued educational use for the foreseeable future.”

A spokesperson for Explorium said the Compton Dundon site was the first in what was hoped to be a network of supplementary education centres: “It  will be operated as a social enterprise rather than a conventional school. The organisation is privately funded and does not receive any grant from central government.”

Explorium has plans to publish a social history book of the building, collating the stories and photos from generations of the community who were educated in the building, which dates back to circa 1872.
