Britain's oldest bakery for sale in Plymouth11th May 2014

The freehold interest on the historic Jacka’s Bakery in Plymouth is being offered at £275,000A slice of British baking history has come onto the market in Devon, with the 17th Century Plymouth bakery Jacka's  - reputedly Britain's oldest bakery - being offered for sale at £275,000 through property agents Huntley & Partners.

Dating back to the early 1600s, Jacka's is situated at 38 Southside Street, a Grade II listed building in the Barbican, Plymouth's Elizabethan quarter. Local legend states that the Pilgrim fathers took biscuits baked at Jacka's with them when they set sail to America in the Mayflower in 1620.

The property, which is full of character and has many original features including an Elizabethan balcony at the rear, is a fully equipped retail bakery with the original bread oven and preparation area on the ground floor, with additional preparation and storage areas, plus two to three bedroom owner's accommodatin on the first and second floors.

Brian Hasell FRICS, senior partner of Huntley & Partners, said: “Businesses with the historic credentials of Jacka’s don’t come on to the market that often. It is a very profitable operation currently turning over approximately £150,000 per annum. It benefits from local residents’ custom and trade from yacht owners and the fishing community as well as the year round business from the thousands of tourists attracted to one of the country’s most famous historic locations where the narrow cobbled streets are characterised by superb restaurants, pubs, galleries and gift shops."

Mr Hasell said that Jacka's offers considerable potential to future purchasers to reintroduce on-site baking, as currently all Jacka's products are prepared off-site and then baked off on arrival. "I think a family team or hands on owner/managers could take this business to another level."

Although the freehold for Jacka’s is being offered at £275,000 plus SAV, the business is also available on a leasehold basis, with a new lease, at an annual rental of £15,000.
