The man, in his 30s, confessed on April 29, 2026, after his wife had been reported missing since late March.

The zoo, known for its unique behavioral exhibits, typically attracts over one million visitors annually. However, it has now closed indefinitely due to the ongoing forensic investigation by Hokkaido prefectural police. “The decision to postpone its opening was ‘painful’,” said Hirosuke Imazu, a zoo official.

Prior to this incident, the zoo had already been closed for seasonal renovations since April 8. The timing is particularly unfortunate as it coincides with Golden Week, a peak holiday period when many families visit attractions like Asahiyama Zoo.

The ongoing investigation includes searching both the zoo’s incinerator and the employee’s home. Forensic teams are currently sifting through ash and bone fragments from the incinerator. This shocking revelation has raised concerns about domestic violence and workplace isolation in northern Japan.

Local officials have expressed regret over the inconvenience caused to visitors during this busy holiday season. “A zoo exists to be seen by visitors,” one Asahikawa official remarked. The economic impact on the city is also troubling; estimates suggest a loss of around 150 million JPY in revenue due to the closure.

Community members are left grappling with these revelations. “We want things to return to normal as soon as possible,” said a local resident. This incident has not only disrupted a beloved attraction but also highlighted deeper societal issues that require attention.

“We believe this is the best chance to identify the male as this image can be distributed throughout the UK and abroad in our efforts to identify him,” stated Detective Inspector Anthea Ponting, who is leading the investigation into the unidentified man found at Claerwen Reservoir on October 17, 2024.

The body was discovered wearing a wetsuit, with no other clothing or identifiable marks. Authorities estimate that the man had been in the water for up to 12 weeks before being found. He is described as aged between 30 and 60, approximately 6 feet tall, and weighing between 202 and 220 pounds.

Detective Inspector Ponting noted, “It’s really unusual,” referring to the circumstances surrounding the case. The investigation has been ongoing for over 16 months with no significant leads, prompting police to make public appeals and search medical databases and missing persons cases.

The facial reconstruction of the man was created using photographs, a post-mortem report, a forensic dental report, and a CT scan. The wetsuit found with him was sized XL, and he exhibited an unusual dental pattern identified as an open bite.

Despite extensive efforts, including a police search involving a low-flying helicopter and drones, the man’s cause of death remains unconfirmed after an inconclusive post-mortem. Professor Caroline Wilkinson remarked, “Forensic cases are always really sad,” highlighting the emotional weight of such investigations.

She further explained, “If they need our help, it generally means that it’s a difficult case to identify.” The police believe the man may have entered the reservoir in mid-summer 2024, but details remain unconfirmed regarding how he ended up there.

As the investigation continues, authorities remain hopeful that the release of the facial reconstruction will yield new leads in identifying the deceased. The community is urged to come forward with any information that may assist in this ongoing investigation.
