The race really opens access to our sport,” said Adam Freeman-Pask, capturing the spirit of anticipation surrounding the upcoming 2026 CHANEL J12 Boat Race.

Scheduled for Saturday, April 4, 2026, this iconic race will see teams from Oxford University and Cambridge University compete over a distance of 6.8 km along the Thames, from Putney Bridge to Chiswick Bridge. The Women’s Boat Race is set to kick off at 14:21, followed by the Men’s Boat Race at 15:21, promising a day filled with excitement and community engagement.

As the race day approaches, thousands of spectators are expected to flock to Putney Town Centre and the Embankment to witness this historic event. The atmosphere is sure to be electric, with local schools and clubs, including Fulham Reach Boat Club and Sacred Heart High School, rallying support for their teams. The event not only showcases athletic prowess but also fosters a sense of community pride.

In preparation for the influx of visitors, local authorities have announced that road closures and parking suspensions will be in effect from 7 am to 7 pm on race day. Specifically, parking will be suspended on Putney Embankment from Thai Square to Leader’s Gardens, ensuring a smooth experience for both participants and spectators.

Cambridge University has dominated the Boat Race in recent years, leading the overall results tally in the Men’s Boat Race by 88-81 and in the Women’s Boat Race by 49-30. The stakes are high, and both teams are gearing up for what promises to be a thrilling contest. The Men’s Boat Race record, set by Cambridge in 1998 at 16 minutes 19 seconds, and the Women’s record, established in 2017 at 18 minutes 33 seconds, are both on the minds of competitors as they prepare for the challenge ahead.

For those unable to attend in person, the race will be broadcast in the UK on Channel 4 from 13:30 to 16:30, allowing fans to cheer on their teams from home. Times Radio will also serve as the official radio partner for the Boat Race for the next three years, ensuring that the excitement reaches an even wider audience.

As the community gears up for this exciting event, local schools such as Hammersmith Academy, Fulham Boys School, West London Free School, and Fulham Cross Girls’ School are also getting involved, fostering a spirit of camaraderie and support among young athletes. The Boat Race is more than just a competition; it is a celebration of sport, community, and tradition.

With the race just around the corner, all eyes will be on the Thames as the teams prepare to make their mark. Expect a vibrant atmosphere, filled with cheers and community spirit, as the 2026 Boat Race promises to be a memorable event for all involved.

The Hammersmith Head race recently took place, serving as the final major event before the Women’s Eights Head of the River Race (WEHORR). This race provided a crucial opportunity for teams to showcase their capabilities ahead of the prestigious WEHORR, scheduled in two weeks.

Why It Matters

Among the key competitors, the Leander Club, known for its strong performances, entered two boats in the women’s championship eights category. Despite facing tough competition, including a recent loss to Cambridge University, Leander remains a strong contender following their success at the Fours Head event in November. The University of London Boat Club, which secured second and third places last year, is also gearing up for a fierce competition, having demonstrated strong performances in their last race.

What’s Next

As the teams prepare for the Women’s Eights Head of the River Race, they will need to navigate the challenging river conditions that have affected training. The upcoming race will not only determine the winners of the championship but also set the stage for future competitions in the rowing calendar.
