Anthony Joshua secured a victory against Kristian Prenga in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, after experiencing two knockdowns in the first round. The British heavyweight ultimately stopped Prenga in the second round of the fight, which marked his return to the ring.
Joshua’s comeback fight followed a car crash in Nigeria in December, which resulted in the deaths of his friends Sina Ghami and Latif ‘Latz’ Ayodele. He entered the ring with the names of Ghami and Ayodele on his chest and the canvas also displayed their names alongside the words ‘My Brother’s Keeper’.
Dramatic First Round
The fight began dramatically, with Prenga landing a right uppercut just 20 seconds into the first round, sending Joshua to the canvas. Joshua quickly rose, appearing dazed. Later in the same round, a left uppercut from Prenga caused Joshua to be knocked down again. At this point, there was speculation that a major upset was possible, which could have jeopardized a highly anticipated fight against Tyson Fury.
During the intense first round, promoter Eddie Hearn was observed giving instructions from ringside, while Joshua’s stablemate Oleksandr Usyk watched with concern. Prenga, who had a record of knockouts from victories, sensed an opportunity after the early knockdowns.
Joshua’s Second Round Comeback
Despite appearing unsteady at the start of the second round, Joshua capitalized when Prenga began to box defensively. Drawing Prenga in with a jab, Joshua then delivered a powerful right hand, followed by additional rights that led to Prenga collapsing to the canvas. The referee subsequently halted the contest.
Joshua celebrated his victory, climbing onto the ropes in jubilation. Usyk, who had trained with Joshua and his team in preparation for the fight, was seen taking a deep breath of relief. This marked Prenga’s second career loss.
After the fight, Joshua, spoke about the emotional significance of the win, stating, “It’s more than punch power. That was spirit, that was Latz, that was Sina, that was the families. It hurts to even talk about it. It has been tough.” He also mentioned, “It’s my brothers. I don’t want to talk about it.”
Anticipation for Future Fights
The victory has further set the stage for a potential fight between Joshua and Fury. Contracts for this long-awaited bout have reportedly been signed, though the specific venue and date remain undisclosed. The fight is understood to be planned for November. While British fans hope for a homecoming event, Saudi organizers and broadcasters are said to favor a venue in the United States to appeal to American audiences.
Fury had previously defeated Mariusz Wach in Pattaya, Thailand, in a warm-up fight. Despite earlier speculation about his attendance, Fury was not present at Joshua’s fight. Hearn commented on the significance of Joshua’s performance, stating, “No-one knows what he’s been through over the last seven months. When he went down in the first round, I thought he’d come back too soon.”
Joshua addressed the prospect of fighting Fury, saying, “I respect everything he has done and everything that he has achieved, but as a fighting person, we’re here now. I hope the fans will be in for a lovely treat.”
The contest between Joshua and Prenga was Joshua’s first against a recognized professional opponent since a fight with Daniel Dubois. His only other fight since then was against Jake Paul in December, which occurred before the fatal car crash that left him injured.
