“We were all hoping to adorn the main Village Green for next Spring … but sadly the Parish Council last night rejected my plan,” said Brian May, expressing his disappointment over his proposal to plant daffodils in Elstead.
The Elstead Parish Council turned down May’s request, citing safety concerns as their primary reason. They worried that the sight lines for traffic could be obstructed by the 18-inch daffodil stalks.
This decision comes after May, a well-known figure and guitarist of Queen, had previously donated 3,000 daffodil bulbs to the community last year. Those bulbs bloomed unexpectedly in bright yellow at St James’ Church.
May shared his confusion regarding the council’s objections, stating, “Apparently the main objection is that the sight lines on the green will be affected for traffic.” He questioned how such short flowers could obstruct views when a parked ice cream van nearby stood at 7 feet tall.
The council did suggest alternative locations for planting, but May did not find those options suitable. He has a strong connection with this community and aims to engage them through initiatives like this one.
The village green holds significant value for residents as it serves as a venue for various community events. The council acknowledged the disappointment felt by many who supported May’s idea.
The council emphasized its responsibility to balance community initiatives with safety and accessibility. They stated, “The Parish Council has a duty to balance the practical usage of our green along with the views of our residents.”
Looking ahead, May indicated he might revisit his plans for daffodil planting in the future. For now, he continues to engage with his 3.6 million Instagram followers about his love for gardening and community beautification.
