England’s World Cup semi-final defeat

England suffered a World Cup semi-final defeat against Argentina, with the South American side securing a victory. Anthony Gordon initially gave England the lead. However, Argentina mounted a comeback with late goals from Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez, the latter scoring in the 92nd minute to complete the turnaround.

Following Gordon’s goal, reports indicate that Thomas Tuchel made defensive substitutions, including bringing on Ezri Konsa for Gordon and switching to a back-five formation. Ten minutes later, Declan Rice was replaced by Nico O’Reilly, resulting in six defenders on the pitch for England, four of whom were centre-backs. Harry Kane also dropped deeper to aid the defence against Lionel Messi and the repeated Argentina attacks.

Some players within the squad reportedly felt these tactical changes hindered their chances of winning, believing the team lacked an outlet to hold the ball up or run down the flanks, which could have relieved pressure on the defence.

Player reactions and Tuchel’s comments

A number of England players, including senior figures, were reportedly bemused by Tuchel’s defensive substitutions. They are understood to have felt that the changes were negative and made it more difficult for England’s defence to get respite and maintain possession. Despite these concerns, there is no indication of a rift within the England camp or animosity towards Tuchel, who is described as a popular and authoritative leader.

Tuchel stated after the match that he believed the issue was systemic in English football, suggesting players were unable to maintain possession under pressure. He did not think his tactics were incorrect, explaining his plan to use a back-five was to limit crosses and space for Argentina after they had introduced Nico Gonzalez and shifted Messi to the right wing in a 4-2-4 formation. He also commented that ball possession is not in England’s DNA in the same way it is for Spanish, Argentinian, or Brazilian football.

Sources suggest that some England players disagree with Tuchel’s assessment that there is a weakness in English football’s DNA regarding possession. Players such as Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, Kobbie Mainoo, Elliot Anderson, Eberechi Eze, Reece James, and John Stones are known for their ability to keep the ball at club level. This has led to questions about whether Tuchel truly believes in the potential of the current generation of English talent.

Looking ahead

Tuchel has encouraged his squad to put their disappointment behind them and focus on the upcoming bronze-medal match against France. This match will take place in Miami. If England secure third place, it would mark their best men’s World Cup finish since their victory in 1966.

Tuchel is understood to have expressed pride in the team’s efforts, as they reached a World Cup semi-final for only the fourth time in their history. The coach maintains the full backing of the Football Association and has stated his commitment to remain in his role.

Tuchel signed a contract extension, having initially been appointed with a mission to win the 2026 World Cup.
