The Genesis Scottish Open saw a competitive start, with Rory McIlroy among five players sharing the early lead after the opening round. The tournament, held at The Renaissance Club, featured a crowded leaderboard, indicating a closely contested event.

McIlroy, making his first appearance since the US Open, recorded a five-under 65. This placed him at the top alongside Patrick Cantlay, Rasmus Hojgaard, Tom Kim, and Bernd Wiesberger. McIlroy’s round included an eagle, five birdies, and two bogeys, three years after his previous victory at the event.

Scottie Scheffler is also in contention, positioned three shots behind the leaders. Other notable players, such as Brooks Koepka, are just one shot off the pace. The leaderboard remains tight, with a significant number of players closely grouped.

Opening Round Highlights

McIlroy’s performance on the opening day demonstrated strong play, particularly with his driving. He began his round on the back nine, where he bogeyed his first hole. However, he quickly recovered with a two-putt birdie at the par-five 12th, followed by additional shots gained at the 14th and 16th holes.

Despite failing to save par at the 18th, McIlroy secured an 18-foot eagle at the par-five first hole. He continued to create scoring opportunities throughout his round, finding back-to-back gains from the seventh hole. McIlroy noted his effective driving, stating it allowed him to attack the course and set up chances for scoring.

Patrick Cantlay also had a strong start, achieving five birdies in a bogey-free round. Bernd Wiesberger briefly held the solo lead before a bogey on the penultimate hole. Tom Kim completed the group of five leaders with his five-under 65.

Scheffler, who will be looking to defend his title at The Open next week, finished his round with a two-under 68. His performance included four birdies and two bogeys. Scheffler expressed satisfaction with some aspects of his play but noted that he wished he could have gained a few more shots, particularly on the par-fives, and preferred a cleaner scorecard.

The leaderboard shows 71 players separated by just five strokes after the initial round, highlighting the competitive nature of the tournament. Matt Fitzpatrick and Tommy Fleetwood are in a group two shots behind the leaders, which also includes local favourite Bob MacIntyre and US Open champion Wyndham Clark. Clark is within two shots of the lead despite recording a double-bogey and a bogey within his first four holes.

Hojgaard’s Day Two Progress

Rasmus Hojgaard, one of the overnight leaders, experienced a mixed start to his second day. After a wayward tee shot on the 11th hole, he found himself in thick rough. His second shot then went off to the left of the green, making it difficult to secure a par.

Hojgaard was unable to make par on the 11th, resulting in a bogey. This was a setback after he had reached six under earlier in the morning. However, he demonstrated resilience by bouncing back on the 12th hole with an excellent birdie.

In the opening round, Hojgaard had reached six under before a double-bogey on the par-four 16th halted his progress. He was the top performer in the afternoon wave on day one, securing a birdie on the par-three 17th, though he could not find another birdie on the final hole to reclaim the top spot.

The tournament continues to be closely watched, with live coverage available on Friday from 8:30 am.

Wyndham Clark claimed his second major victory at the 126th U.S. Open, winning in a wire-to-wire fashion at Shinnecock Hills. This win marks his second U.S. Open title in four years, following his triumph in 2023. Clark finished one stroke ahead of Sam Burns, securing a record-breaking prize money for his victory.

Clark’s path to victory was not without its challenges, particularly regarding crowd reception. On the Saturday before his final round, as he completed his third round with a significant lead, the grandstands were sparsely populated. Clark noted the unfortunate lack of spectators for what he considered key moments in his round.

The muted atmosphere prompted discussion among golf observers, with various theories emerging. Some attributed the low attendance to the location and the commute back to Manhattan, while others suggested the World Cup or the USGA’s scheduling decision to start the final pairing later in the afternoon. However, a prevailing sentiment was that the crowd’s indifference was directed at Clark himself.

Despite the subdued reception on Saturday, Sunday saw a dramatic shift in crowd dynamics. Shinnecock Hills was overflowing with spectators, but Clark found himself in the role of an antagonist. Throughout the day, playing alongside Scottie Scheffler, the galleries often reacted negatively to Clark’s shots, cheering his misfortunes and remaining silent when he salvaged pars. Incidents included fans being removed for hurling abuse, and loud cheers when Clark encountered trouble on the course.

Clark acknowledged the crowd’s sentiment during the trophy ceremony, stating, “New York didn’t really like me. I love you guys. But I get it.” This public perception is not new for Clark, who has faced scrutiny following incidents such as breaking lockers at Oakmont and other displays of frustration on the course. He has been working to repair his image and has become a figure who elicits strong reactions in the golf world.

Rebuilding Game and Mindset

The version of Clark who arrived at Shinnecock Hills was different from the one who left Oakmont a year prior. He spent the intervening months focusing on both his game and his mental approach. Julie Elion, his sports psychologist since 2022, played a crucial role in helping him navigate a crisis of confidence that followed his previous struggles. Elion was present on the driving range on Sunday, helping Clark maintain his focus amidst the pressure.

Clark also sought to refine his swing, collaborating with Cherry Hills instructor Pat Coyner. This collaboration aimed to address a prolonged slump and help Clark regain the form that had previously established him as a rising star in the sport. The efforts in both his mental and technical game began to show results as he approached the U.S. Open.

The period after Oakmont was described by Clark as a time when his inner circle created a “cocoon” around him. Missing out on the Ryder Cup further impacted him. However, this period of isolation, technical adjustments, and mental reset ultimately fostered a renewed sense of self-belief. Clark indicates that the anger that once fueled his outbursts has largely subsided, replaced by a new perspective derived from improved performance, greater personal contentment, and a realization that he had become overly concerned with external factors.

A Champion’s Resilience

Clark’s victory at Shinnecock Hills demonstrated a player who had not only rebuilt his swing and confidence but also learned to perform without needing public approval. This marks his second U.S. Open title in four years, a feat achieved by navigating golf’s demanding tests. In 2023, he stared down Rory McIlroy, and in this recent victory, he held off the world No. 1, Scottie Scheffler, despite facing a largely unsupportive crowd.

His final round score of 73 was the highest by a U.S. Open champion since Graeme McDowell in 2010. Clark’s new world ranking after this victory is eighth, marking his return to the top ten since April 2025. He is also only the second player since 1986 to win the U.S. Open twice while ranked outside the top 30 on both occasions. This win adds him to a list of 24 players who have won the U.S. Open multiple times, with 1099 days separating his two titles.

Clark is now the ninth wire-to-wire winner of the U.S. Open, joining notable names such as Walter Hagen, Ben Hogan, and Tiger Woods. Americans have now won ten of the last 12 U.S. Opens. Tom Kim, who turned 24 on Sunday, matched the best finish by a player representing the Republic of Korea by finishing third. Adam Scott also reached a milestone, becoming only the second player in history to achieve 100 consecutive major appearances.

The championship also saw two amateur winners of the Low Amateur honours, Ryder Cowan and Jackson Koivun, with a total of five amateurs making the cut. Keith Mitchell achieved a unique record, becoming the only player in U.S. Open history to record all four rounds at level par. Clark’s ability to maintain his focus and execute under pressure, culminating in a crucial birdie at the 16th hole, provided the necessary cushion to secure his victory by a single stroke.

Phil Mickelson, a six-time major champion, is no longer a member of The Farms Golf Club near San Diego. This development follows accusations of inappropriate contact with a female employee at the club, according to reports.

The alleged incident occurred this past spring, prior to a round of golf. A female employee accused Mickelson of what was described as “nonconsensual and inappropriate physical contact.” The employee reported the incident to her supervisors.

Club’s Response and Investigation

Club officials at The Farms Golf Club reportedly confronted Mickelson during his golf round and asked him to leave the premises. He departed the club before completing his round. The club issued a statement confirming that an individual is no longer a member following a staff report of misconduct.

The statement from The Farms indicated: “Following a staff member report of member misconduct, the Club provided immediate and ongoing support to the staff member, conducted a thorough independent investigation of the incident and took decisive action. This individual is no longer a member of The Farms Golf Club.” Multiple sources cited in the reports identified the individual as Mickelson.

The club also stated that it conducts thorough reviews of all reported matters in accordance with California Law and takes appropriate action when warranted, consistent with its commitment to integrity, excellence, and accountability. To protect the safety and privacy of staff and members, the club stated it could not speak further on the matter.

Mickelson’s Statement and Absence from Tournaments

A spokesperson for Mickelson provided a statement, indicating that “Any misunderstanding has been cleared up.” The spokesperson added that Mickelson “continues to attend to a family health matter and is uncertain when he will be able to return to professional golf.”

Mickelson has retained defamation counsel, Tom Clare, who stated that the description of events is “squarely contradicted by objective, video evidence.” However, reports indicate that, according to The Farms, there is no camera footage of the alleged incident. Clare later provided a statement noting that there is a great deal of misinformation circulating and that Mickelson, while focused on a private family health matter, is determined to hold accountable any publication or individual trafficking in speculation or false rumors.

The 55-year-old golfer has played in only one tournament on the LIV Golf tour this year. This limited participation is due to what he and his camp have repeatedly termed a private health matter involving a family member. His lone appearance on LIV this season was in late March in South Africa, where he finished T-48.

Mickelson did not participate in either the Masters or the PGA Championship, for which he retains eligibility. He is also not in the field for the upcoming U.S. Open, the only major tournament he has not won. He would require a special exemption to play in the U.S. Open, as his exemption from his 2021 PGA Championship win has expired.

In a statement released on April 2, a week before the Masters, Mickelson explained he would not be playing at Augusta National and would be out for “an extended period of time as my family continues to navigate a personal health matter.”

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-37985" src="https://www.propnews.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/inline_gn-ccf64991b02a_img-4.webp" alt="PLYMOUTH, MI - AUGUST 23: Phil Mickelson of HyFlyers GC smiles on the 16th green during Day Two of LIV Michigan at The Cardinal at Saint John's on August 23, 2025 in Plymouth, Michigan.
Impact on Mickelson’s Career

Mickelson’s career trajectory has been described as both strange and fascinating. Once considered one of golf’s most popular players and a favorite among galleries, his presence and aura have reportedly diminished significantly since his move to LIV Golf in 2022.

While he continues to play in major tournaments where he is eligible, he is said to walk with smaller galleries. Since joining LIV, he has missed the cut at nine of the 14 majors he has played, including three of the four majors last year.

The employee involved in the alleged incident at The Farms Golf Club has been identified and verified, but declined to participate in the story, according to reports.
