England prepare for Ghana match after Tuchel’s training ground demands go viral

England are preparing for their second World Cup 2026 group stage match against Ghana, following a 4-2 victory over Croatia in their opening game. The team’s training methods under manager Thomas Tuchel have drawn attention, particularly after a video of him shouting at defender Djed Spence during a passing drill went viral.

Spence, a Tottenham Hotspur player, was told to “wake up” by Tuchel. Despite the public nature of the incident, Spence stated that such demands are a normal part of the game and reflect Tuchel’s commitment to high standards. He described Tuchel as a “great manager” who is “very detailed in what he wants to do” and aims to build a strong team environment.

Aston Villa forward Ollie Watkins echoed Spence’s sentiments, noting that Tuchel is “not afraid” to shout at players to maintain focus and drive standards. Watkins recounted a moment during training where Tuchel shouted at Spence shortly after Watkins himself had made a mistake, highlighting the manager’s consistent push for perfection from his squad.

Tuchel’s coaching style is seen as integral to England’s performance, particularly the team’s ability to execute what has been termed “The Surge.” This tactical approach, observed during the second half against Croatia in Dallas, involves aggressive, high-energy attacking play. Tuchel’s criticism after the first half against Croatia was that the team “didn’t dare to eliminate, to play through gaps,” indicating a desire for more precise and brave passing.

The concept of “packing,” which involves aggressive passes that bypass multiple opposition players, is central to Tuchel’s strategy. This approach focuses on holding possession and making forward passes more effective, rather than simply increasing physical exertion. The team’s counter-pressing in Dallas was also attributed to being in the correct positions, rather than solely expending more energy.

England’s captain, Harry Kane, is seen as a key attacking player around whom the team’s strategy is built. His strong form and presence are considered vital, with other players expected to support his role rather than compete creatively. The team’s realistic approach acknowledges past World Cup knockout stage performances, with a semi-final appearance considered a significant achievement.

The team arrived in Boston on Monday for their match against Ghana, scheduled for a 4pm local kick-off. A win against Ghana would secure England’s place in the knockout stages, easing pressure for their final group game against Panama in New York. Ghana also won their opening Group L match, defeating Panama 1-0.

Tuchel’s ability to block out external pressure is also noted as an asset, particularly in the post-Southgate era. The squad’s current accommodation in a standard four-star hotel, rather than a more luxurious setting, is seen to reflect a grounded and realistic approach to the tournament.

The focus on “The Surge” and precise tactical execution is intended to be sustainable, regardless of external factors like temperature, as games are now broken into quarters and smaller segments by set pieces, allowing for controlled periods of rest and urgency. The team’s next challenge is their match against Ghana on Tuesday.
