Electric Car Milestone in the UK: Over Two Million Registered

The UK has reached a significant milestone with over two million electric vehicles registered as of April 2026, driven by government support and increasing market demand. This remarkable growth reflects a broader shift towards zero emission vehicles across the country.

The transition to electric vehicles (EVs) has been bolstered by initiatives such as the Electric Car Grant, which has assisted over 100,000 drivers in making the switch. The UK Government’s investment of £7.5 billion demonstrates a commitment to enhancing charging infrastructure and promoting EV sales.

Currently, there are more than 119,000 public charge points throughout the UK, making it easier for drivers to adopt electric cars. In fact, electric cars now account for 22.4% of the new car market in 2026, showcasing their growing popularity.

Heidi Alexander from the UK Government remarked, “Today, over two million EVs are now registered across the UK, a landmark moment in the UK’s transition to electric.” Meanwhile, Tanya Sinclair from an industry group stated, “Two million electric vehicles in the UK shows that if the market offers choice, value and availability, drivers will snap it up.”

This growth is evident as EV registrations increased by 31.2% from December 2024 to December 2025. Furthermore, overall registrations have risen by around 15% compared to last year.

Vicky Edmonds from a leading automotive organization emphasized the importance of incentives in this transition: “Two million EVs is a huge milestone and shows what’s possible when the right incentives are in place.” The trend indicates that as prices for electric cars become more competitive—often cheaper than petrol models when discounts are considered—more consumers are likely to make the switch.
