Elsie Kelly: Beloved Benidorm Star Dies at 89

Elsie Kelly, the beloved actress who brought laughter to many as Noreen in the hit ITV comedy Benidorm, has died at the age of 89 on April 21, 2026. Her passing marks the end of an era for fans who admired her wit and warmth.

Born in Liverpool in 1936, Kelly’s career spanned decades. She first made her mark on television in 1979, appearing in the soap opera Crossroads, where she played Mrs. Tardebrigge until its cancellation in 1988. Yet it was her role as Noreen that truly endeared her to audiences from 2006 to 2018.

Noreen was originally meant to be killed off in the first episode of Benidorm. However, a connection developed between her character and another, prompting a change of plans. “The writer who had the original idea said ‘No, I’m going to have to change it’ because he felt there was a real relationship starting between them,” Kelly once recounted.

Her character became a fan favorite, appearing in nine of the ten seasons of Benidorm. In the final season, she even took on an additional role as Noreen’s twin sister Doreen. This versatility showcased her talent beyond comedy.

Derren Litten, the creator of Benidorm, expressed his sadness over her passing. “So sad to pass on the news of the passing of Elsie Kelly aka Noreen in Benidorm,” he shared. Others echoed similar sentiments about her influence and legacy.

Crissy Rock, who starred alongside Kelly, reflected on their time together: “We shared so many wonderful memories filming Benidorm, moments I’ll always treasure. She was an absolute joy to work with and brought so much warmth and laughter wherever she went.” This sentiment resonates with many who worked with her.

Before becoming a household name on screen, Kelly was a musical theatre director. She directed the Birkenhead Operatic Society Trust from 1974 until 2019, showcasing her passion for performance behind the scenes.

The news of her death was confirmed by her agent Michelle Sykes. Tributes from fans and colleagues alike have poured in, highlighting how much she meant to those around her.

As we remember Elsie Kelly’s remarkable contributions to television and theatre, one thing is clear—her comedic genius will not be forgotten. Details remain unconfirmed regarding any memorial plans or tributes that may take place in her honor.
