England’s Path to Victory
England has claimed its sixth World Cup of Darts title, defeating the Netherlands 10-5 in the final held in Frankfurt. The top-seeded English pair, Luke Littler and Luke Humphries, overcame the Dutch duo of Michael van Gerwen and Gian van Veen in a best-of-19-legs match. This victory marks the second World Cup title for Humphries and the first for Littler.
The English team’s journey to the final included earlier victories on Sunday against Wales and Scotland. Last year, Littler and Humphries experienced a second-round exit to hosts Germany, which had raised questions about their partnership. However, this year they demonstrated strong form, maintaining an average of over 104 in the final match.
Key Moments in the Final
The final began with a close contest, with both teams holding their throws. Littler secured the first break by hitting double 10, giving England a crucial advantage. Following this, Humphries extended England’s lead by taking out 87 to achieve another break, establishing a three-leg cushion. The English pair, consisting of the Premier League champion and runner-up, maintained their lead from that point.
Littler further extended England’s advantage to 6-2 by hitting tops, with the team’s average briefly reaching 114. Despite a timely maximum from Van Veen and a 14-dart leg from the Dutch, England continued to press. Humphries recovered from a slight error to hit double four, putting the duo 7-3 ahead before the second interval. Although the Dutch briefly found a lifeline when Littler missed a 78 checkout, allowing Van Veen to check out 64, and Van Gerwen held his throw, England ultimately broke again after Van Gerwen busted on an attempted eight checkout following a 174. Humphries then sealed the world title for England with a nine, 16, and double eight finish.
Overcoming Earlier Challenges
Before their final triumph, England faced significant challenges in the earlier rounds. In their quarter-final match against Wales, Littler and Humphries found themselves 0-4 down and still trailed 2-5 at the break. However, they mounted a comeback in the second session, with Humphries erasing the deficit and Littler securing the lead with a double tops. Wales’ Nick Kenny forced a deciding leg, but Littler ultimately found double two to win after Kenny missed 84.
England had a stronger start in their semi-final against Scotland, represented by Gary Anderson and Cameron Menzies. The English pair went into the interval with a 5-2 lead after breaking in the fourth leg. A 12-darter in the tenth leg brought England close to victory, and Littler secured the win with a single match dart on double 20. Scotland, who had previously thrashed Norway 8-0 and beaten the Republic of Ireland 8-5, had limited opportunities at doubles in the first session against the strong performance of Littler and Humphries, both of whom averaged over 100.
Other notable results from the tournament included Wales’ Jonny Clayton and Nick Kenny securing a 4-1 victory over Lithuania in their opening group match. Germany’s Martin Schindler and Ricardi Pietreczko achieved a 4-0 win against the Philippines, while Ireland’s Willie O’Connor and Mickey Mansell defeated Singapore 4-1. The group stage action for the World Cup of Darts continued on Friday afternoon.
