First Half Action Sees Australia Take Lead

The Nations Championship Test between Australia and France in Brisbane delivered a chaotic and frenetic first half. The unstructured nature of play appeared to suit Australia, who demonstrated an eagerness to attack at every opportunity. Despite the broken field rugby, the Wallabies gained an advantage through three 50-22 kicks and effective lineout play.

Early in the match, Fraser McReight scored a try for Australia, benefiting from a well-executed set-piece. The lineout was described as textbook, with Canham showing strength and the maul forming rapidly. With France temporarily down a player, the Australian maul advanced over the line with force, allowing McReight to touch down. Ryan Lonergan successfully added the conversion, contributing to Australia’s lead.

The first half also featured moments of end-to-end play. France nearly scored but turned over possession, leading to an Australian counter-attack. France then regained possession and came close to scoring again, but McReight intervened to prevent the try. The half concluded with France being awarded a penalty inside Australia’s half, following a period of intense action.

An effervescent Australia lead at the break.Photograph: Bradley Kanaris/Getty Images Credit: theguardian.com

As the first half drew to a close, the Wallabies maintained a nine-point lead over France. Statistics from the first half showed Australia with 52 percent possession, while France held 55 percent territory. Australia had 16 defenders beaten compared to France’s 12. Both teams had a tackle completion rate of 76 percent. Australia secured one line-out steal, and France conceded five penalties to Australia’s two.

France Rallies in Second Half

The second half began with France showing clear intent, making multiple visits into the Wallabies’ half. Early in the half, Australia was penalised for a dangerous tackle by Max Jorgensen on French winger Théo Attissogbe, a decision made three minutes after the incident. From this penalty, Maxime Lucu successfully kicked a penalty goal, reducing Australia’s lead.

France continued to press, and Aaron Grandidier-Nkanang scored his second try for France after sustained attack. Matthieu Jalibert kicked for his winger on the left edge, and Grandidier-Nkanang completed the score. During the build-up to this try, Tom Wright was shown a yellow card for an infringement in defence, leaving the Wallabies with 14 players for ten minutes.

Fraser McReight of the Wallabies in action during the 2026 Nations Championship Test between Australia and France at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.Photograph: Jason O’Brien/EPA Credit: theguardian.com

Capitalising on their numerical advantage, France scored again through Romain Ntamack, who crossed down the left edge. Maxime Lucu converted from out wide, giving France the lead. Shortly after, Florian Verhaeghe scored another try under the posts, extending France’s advantage. The conversion attempt was successful, further increasing France’s lead.

France’s momentum continued, with the team scoring 25 unanswered points after half-time. A potential try by Théo Attissogbe was disallowed after review, as the final pass from Matthieu Jalibert was judged to have gone forward. This provided a significant let-off for Australia, whose defence had been under pressure.

Late Game Developments

As the game progressed, Australia struggled to regain attacking opportunities. In the 65th minute, the Wallabies entered France’s territory but lost possession, marking one of their few attacking chances in the second half. Later, Jock Campbell was penalised for an obstruction play inside Australia’s half, and Maxime Lucu converted the penalty, adding to France’s lead.

In the 68th minute, the Wallabies had an encouraging entry inside the French 22, building pressure through phase play. However, Nick Champion de Crespigny, who had replaced Rob Valetini, knocked on close to France’s line, ending the attacking chance. Despite efforts to maintain possession and move the ball, Australia found it difficult to penetrate France’s defence, with play often grinding to a halt due to strong French tackling and turnovers.

France continued to manage the game effectively, slowing down play and inviting aerial contests in Australia’s half. The Wallabies attempted to create opportunities, but a forward pass from Wright disrupted their efforts. The match saw Australia’s hopes of a comeback diminish as France maintained control, with the score standing at 37-21 in favour of France in the 62nd minute.

The game featured several turnovers, with Fraser McReight forcing two turnovers at the breakdown in the second half. Despite these efforts, Australia faced challenges in maintaining possession and converting opportunities into points. The match was played at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.

England are set to face Norway in the World Cup 2026 quarter-finals, with the match scheduled for Saturday, 11 July, in Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium. Kick-off is slated for 10pm BST, with coverage for viewers in the United Kingdom beginning at 8:45pm BST on ITV1 and available for live stream via ITVX.

The Three Lions arrive in Miami following a victory against co-hosts Mexico in the previous round. Norway, on the other hand, advanced after defeating Brazil in the last 16. The winner of this quarter-final will proceed to the semi-finals, where they will meet the victor of the match between Argentina and Switzerland.

Team preparations and player fitness

Both teams are managing player fitness ahead of the crucial encounter. Several members of the Norway squad have been affected by a virus, though coach Ståle Solbakken has downplayed reports of widespread illness. Julian Ryerson, the right-back, is contending with a hamstring issue but is anticipated to start. The possible starting XI for Norway includes Nyland; Ryerson; Ajer, Heggem, Moller Wolfe; Odegaard, Berge, Berg; Bobb, Haaland, Nusa.

For England, there was positive news as Declan Rice, Marc Guehi, and Reece James were all able to participate in training the day before the match. A key decision for coach Thomas Tuchel revolves around James’s availability at right-back, as he also battles a hamstring problem. If James is unable to play, Tuchel will need to choose between Ezri Konsa or deploying Djed Spence on his weaker side. Jordan Henderson is confirmed to be out of the match due to an arm injury sustained during celebrations in Mexico. The potential starting lineup for England features Pickford; James, Konsa, Guehi, O’Reilly; Anderson, Rice; Saka, Bellingham, Gordon; Kane.

The match conditions in Miami are expected to be challenging due to the heat, which could influence the game’s tempo. Both teams may adopt a more measured approach to possession to cope with the environment.

Tactical considerations for England

A primary tactical challenge for England will be containing Erling Haaland, Norway’s prolific striker. While Norway is not solely reliant on Haaland, his clinical finishing means England must work diligently to limit his opportunities. He is known for his explosive movement within the box and his ability to score with various finishing techniques, including one-touch shots and back-post goals.

Norway’s patient build-up play, demonstrated in their win against Brazil, allows them to control the game and effectively use their wingers. Players like Antonio Nusa, who has been in productive form on the left, and Oscar Bobb, known for his impactful cameo appearances, contribute significantly to Norway’s attack. Martin Ødegaard also plays a crucial role, linking play from higher midfield areas. Norway’s fluid and progressive midfield, combined with their ability to create overloads, will test England’s defensive structure.

Martin Ødegaard (left) and Antonio Nusa are two players who can cause England problems on Saturday night.Photograph: Michael Regan/FIFA/Getty Images Credit: theguardian.com

To counter Norway’s attacking threats, England’s full-backs will need to prevent crosses, and midfielders will be tasked with closing down spaces to disrupt inside passes and creative play in central areas. Norway often plays with two high No. 8s, which Tuchel will likely instruct his team to press to limit their influence on the ball. This approach, however, could open up transition spaces for England, potentially benefiting players like Jude Bellingham, who has been performing well.

Bellingham and Harry Kane have been standout players for England, and the team will look for continued strong performances from Bukayo Saka and Anthony Gordon, who had notable games against Mexico. England’s ability to cope with setbacks was evident in their 3-2 victory against Mexico, where they showed character to score a third goal after going down to 10 men. The quarter-final match against Norway is scheduled to kick off at 10pm BST on Saturday, 11 July.

Salah’s potential move to MLS

Sporting Kansas City has reportedly emerged as a leading contender in Major League Soccer (MLS) to sign Mohamed Salah, as the club pursues an ambitious summer transfer strategy. Sources close to the situation indicate that while a move to MLS is considered a longshot due to significant interest from the Saudi Pro League, Salah remains open to the possibility of playing in the United States. His preference is to stay in Europe, but he is currently evaluating all his options.

Salah, 34, previously announced his departure from Liverpool after a successful period with the Premier League club. His club future has become a central topic following Egypt’s elimination from the World Cup, where they lost to Lionel Messi’s Argentina in the round-of-16.

While several MLS clubs have shown interest in Salah, Sporting Kansas City is reportedly in the strongest position to secure the Egyptian star should he decide to move across the Atlantic. The club’s new majority owner, Peter Mallouk, is the son of Egyptian immigrants.

Egypt star Mohamed Salah facing Argentina in the World Cup Credit: nytimes.com

Sporting KC’s broader transfer ambitions

Mohamed Salah is not the only high-profile player Sporting Kansas City is targeting this summer. The club is committed to increasing its spending and ambition as it enters a new phase. This includes ongoing efforts to sign Toulouse winger Yann Gboho and Olympiacos winger Andre Luiz.

Reports suggest that either of these deals could be among the most expensive in league history, with discussions placing both in the range of $18-20 million. Negotiations for Luiz are reportedly more advanced than those for Gboho.

Gboho, 25, is a former France youth international who had a productive season with 10 goals and three assists in 35 appearances across all competitions. Luiz, 24, joined Olympiacos in January for an approximate fee of $7 million and could potentially move again for nearly triple that amount. He recorded seven goals and six assists in the first half of last season with Rio Ave FC.

Sporting Kansas City is currently in a transitional period, marking the first season under new leadership following the departure of club legend Peter Vermes and a change in majority ownership. New chief soccer officer David Lee is working to enhance the club’s infrastructure and reshape a roster that has not kept pace with the league in recent years.

Rapha Wicky was appointed head coach this winter. After a challenging start, the team showed improved competitiveness in the matches leading up to the MLS World Cup break. Sporting Kansas City currently sits at the bottom of the Western Conference with 11 points after 14 matches.

Salah’s recent performance and future considerations

Salah’s 2025-26 season with Liverpool saw him score seven goals and provide seven assists in 2,150 Premier League minutes. This followed a strong 2024-25 season where he contributed 29 goals and 18 assists in 3,380 league minutes, helping Liverpool secure the title.

His final year at Anfield coincided with a reported breakdown in his relationship with former head coach Arne Slot. While a move to the Saudi Pro League appears to be the most advanced option, with a deal reportedly in principle, Salah is said to be considering geography, favouring clubs in the west of Saudi Arabia due to their proximity to his home country.

Other MLS clubs, including Inter Miami and San Diego FC, have also been mentioned as potential destinations for Salah, though a decision on staying in Europe is now considered increasingly unlikely.

Mikel Merino has once again emerged as a crucial player for Spain, scoring the decisive goal that secured a 2-1 victory against Belgium and propelled his team into the World Cup semi-finals. This marks Spain‘s second appearance in the tournament’s last four, with their previous semi-final in 2010 leading to a trophy win.

The Arsenal midfielder, who came off the bench for the second consecutive match, netted the winner in the 88th minute. This latest heroics sets up a semi-final clash against France, featuring a highly anticipated showdown between Kylian Mbappe and Lamine Yamal.

Merino’s journey to super sub status

Merino‘s current impact on the World Cup stage is particularly notable given his recent challenges. Just months ago, his participation in the tournament was uncertain due to an unusual foot injury—a stress fracture that sidelined him from Arsenal until a month before the competition began.

Despite this setback, Merino not only recovered to earn his place in the Spain squad but has also proven invaluable. He scored in stoppage time during the last 16 match against Portugal and repeated this feat against Belgium.

Spain boss Luis de la Fuente praised Merino, stating, “Mikel is incredible. He has many qualities. He is a player that across the whole World Cup could have played in whatever team and done great.” De la Fuente added that Merino embodies the team’s philosophy, highlighting his commitment and generosity.

Merino himself reflected on his journey, saying that being at the World Cup was “unthinkable” a few months prior. He described his current form as the “highest point” of his career, acknowledging the support he received during difficult times.

His ability to deliver in critical moments is familiar to Arsenal fans, where his height has seen him deployed as a striker by manager Mikel Arteta. Former England striker Wayne Rooney commented on Match of the Day that Merino is “just one of those players who arrives at the right time, at the right moment in big games.”

Lamine Yamal’s evolving role

While Merino has been a standout performer, teenage star Lamine Yamal, who plays for Barcelona, is yet to fully replicate his impactful performances from the Euro 2024 campaign. Despite playing six games in this World Cup and scoring one goal, his overall contribution is still developing.

At times, Yamal has made decisions to shoot when a pass might have been more effective. However, his dribbling skills and pace are crucial in creating space for teammates like Merino. Rooney noted that even players like Lionel Messi can make incorrect decisions at times, and reminded that Yamal entered the tournament with an injury, still finding his rhythm.

Spain‘s defence has been robust, conceding their first goal of the World Cup against Belgium. However, the upcoming match against a high-scoring France team, led by Mbappe, will test their backline significantly.

Former Spain defender Cesar Azpilicueta expressed confidence in Spain‘s ability to control games and recover the ball quickly. He acknowledged that while Yamal‘s game hasn’t translated into many goals or assists, he remains influential in Spain‘s play, constantly seeking to create opportunities.

The quarter-final match against Belgium saw Spain dominate for periods. Fabián Ruiz scored the opening goal, converting a rebound after a shot from Dani Olmo was saved by Thibaut Courtois. Lamine Yamal was involved in the build-up to this goal, providing a well-timed pass.

Belgium equalised through Charles De Ketelaere, who headed in a cross following a move initiated by Jérémy Doku and orchestrated by Kevin De Bruyne. The match also saw Courtois forced off due to injury, replaced by substitute goalkeeper Senne Lammens, who later spilled a shot leading to Merino‘s winning goal.

Merino‘s winner came after he was introduced in the 85th minute. Just under two minutes later, he capitalised on a rebound from Lammens‘ save, smashing the ball into the net. This goal, scored in the 88th minute, adds to his previous late goals against Germany and Portugal.

Merino celebrated his goal in honour of his father, Angel, with his two-month-old son, Marco, also in attendance. The victory ensures Spain‘s progression to the semi-finals.

Michael Edwards has resigned from his position as chief executive of football for Fenway Sports Group (FSG), the owners of Liverpool Football Club. His departure, confirmed on Friday, marks the end of his second tenure with the organisation, having initially informed FSG in autumn 2025 of his intention to leave once he felt plans for Liverpool’s future were established. FSG had expressed a desire for him to remain in the role.

Edwards’ decision is reportedly linked to FSG’s abandonment of plans to acquire a second club to add to its football portfolio. He had been brought back to Liverpool in March 2024 with a broader mandate than his previous role as the club’s first sporting director, a position he held from 2016 to 2022. A significant part of this broader remit was to expand FSG’s football operations, which included exploring multi-club ownership and strategic partnerships.

Despite an extensive search that involved analysing approximately 25 clubs across Europe, with a particular focus on Spain, Portugal, and France, FSG did not proceed with any acquisitions. Clubs such as Getafe, Bordeaux, and Malaga were considered. The plans to purchase a second club were effectively shelved last year, which reportedly left Edwards frustrated by the impasse. This development ultimately put Edwards’ position in question, leading to his departure with a year remaining on his contract.

Edwards stated that it had been a privilege to return to FSG and Liverpool at a crucial time. He expressed confidence that Liverpool is in a strong position with a clear direction for continued success. He also noted that while the broader project to shape FSG’s wider football ambitions evolved differently than initially envisioned, he was proud of the work undertaken by his team in presenting various options to ownership. It is not expected that Edwards will receive a payoff, as his departure was a personal decision.

FSG’s president, Mike Gordon, is anticipated to take on a more direct role in the absence of Edwards. Gordon praised Edwards’ consistent demonstration of exceptional judgment and commitment to building a strong football organisation. He highlighted Edwards’ contribution during Liverpool’s transition period, which saw the club secure its 20th English league title. Edwards first joined Liverpool in November 2011 as head of performance analysis, later becoming sporting director in 2016.

During his initial spell, Edwards earned a reputation as a skilled negotiator. His collaboration with Jürgen Klopp was instrumental in building the team that won the Champions League in 2019 and ended the club’s 30-year wait for a league title with the Premier League victory the following season. After stepping down as sporting director in 2022, he declined numerous job offers from European clubs, including approaches from Manchester United and Chelsea, before returning to FSG in 2024.

Upon his return, Edwards was tasked with overseeing the transition from the Klopp era. He was responsible for appointing Richard Hughes as sporting director and bringing back Julian Ward as FSG technical director. Edwards was also involved in the decision to appoint Andoni Iraola as head coach, following the departure of Arne Slot, who had led Liverpool to their 20th Premier League title in 2025 but was replaced after a below-par second season.

Edwards’ exit is not anticipated to impact Liverpool’s summer transfer activities, as transfer business is managed by Sporting Director Richard Hughes, and plans for the current window are already in place. However, Edwards’ departure adds to the uncertainty surrounding the club’s hierarchy. Hughes, whose contract is set to expire in 2027, has been linked with a move to Al-Hilal in the Saudi Pro League. It is suggested that Hughes could depart once the summer transfer window concludes.

The multi-club ownership model was a key factor in enticing Edwards back to FSG. The inability to progress with this project made his position somewhat redundant, as his remit extended beyond just Liverpool. While FSG did not want to lose him, they ultimately accepted his decision. The situation is not ideal for FSG, who had placed their trust in the Edwards/Hughes partnership to manage Liverpool’s operations in 2024, not expecting it to conclude so soon. Edwards’ departure comes ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.

Belgium’s World Cup campaign concludes

Belgium exited the World Cup after a quarter-final defeat against Spain, following a match where several key players faced injury issues. The team, managed by Rudi Garcia, had navigated a challenging group stage before confronting Spain.

Ahead of the match, Belgium encountered significant setbacks. Amadou Onana was seen on crutches due to a torn anterior cruciate ligament sustained in the last-16 victory against the USA. Defender Zeno Debast was omitted from the squad due to a disagreement between Belgium and Sporting regarding his fitness. Minutes before kick-off, captain Youri Tielemans was removed from the team sheet after suffering an injury during the warm-up, reportedly a suspected hamstring issue. He was replaced by Club Brugge midfielder Hans Vanaken.

Match action and injuries

Jérémy Doku returned to the starting lineup and displayed improved form compared to the group stage. He created space for himself between Pedro Porro and Lamine Yamal, often cutting into channels to disrupt Spain’s midfield. However, his attacking focus left him slightly behind Porro when Spain launched a direct attack, leading to Fábian Ruiz scoring after a cross.

Belgium responded when Charles De Ketelaere, an Atalanta forward, equalised in the 39th minute. After Aymeric Laporte slowed his attempt to set up a throw-in, Kevin De Bruyne threaded a pass to Timothy Castagne on the right flank. Castagne then crossed to De Ketelaere, who headed the ball past Pau Cabarsí for Belgium‘s first shot on target.

Despite Spain regaining control, Belgium found opportunities through Doku‘s dribbling. Although the Manchester City winger may have been affected by a previous respiratory infection, his carries opened up space for teammates like Maxim De Cuyper. Belgium nearly scored a second goal when Doku combined with De Bruyne, but a deflected shot by De Cuyper was not converted.

Garcia‘s team showed more resilience than in previous tournaments. Leandro Trossard was substituted after an hour, part of a triple change that saw Romelu Lukaku and Axel Witsel enter the game. This brought all four veterans from the 2014 World Cup squad onto the pitch with half an hour remaining.

Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois sustained an injury just before the second-half hydration break, massaging his left hip after a save. He attempted to continue but was forced off in the 71st minute, visibly emotional as he left the field. He was replaced by Senne Lammens, who made his World Cup debut.

Thibaut Courtois was forced off with injury against Spain Credit: independent.co.uk

Kevin De Bruyne also struggled with his fitness, leaving the field after a clumsy challenge on Ferran Torres, which earned him a yellow card. Garcia used his final substitution to replace De Bruyne.

Late drama and conclusion

Lammens was unable to secure a speculative shot from outside the box by Pau Cubarsi, spilling the ball into the penalty area. Mikel Merino reacted quickly, poaching the loose ball and scoring past the kneeling Lammens in the 88th minute, sending Spain to their first semi-final since 2010. Merino‘s goal was his second late decider in as many knockout matches.

Axel Witsel and Romelu Lukaku, veterans of Belgium’s 2014 World Cup campaign, embrace after the game.Photograph: Jared C Tilton/Fifa/Getty Images Credit: theguardian.com

Courtois, at 34, may have played his final World Cup match, having participated in four previous editions. His replacement, Lammens, was consoled by teammates following the error. The result means Spain will face France in the semi-final.

Spain advances to semi-finals

Spain has progressed to the semi-finals of the World Cup after a late goal from Mikel Merino secured their victory against Belgium. The match, held in Inglewood, saw Merino score two minutes from time, sending his country into a semi-final clash with France. This marks Merino’s second decisive goal in a World Cup knockout game, following his winning strike against Portugal.

The European champions continued their impressive run, extending their unbeaten streak in competitive matches to 36. Their journey to the semi-finals comes nearly 16 years after Spain’s 2010 generation achieved success on the world stage. The upcoming semi-final against France will take place in Dallas Stadium.

The encounter between Spain and Belgium was the second quarter-final match of the tournament. Spain had previously defeated Portugal with a 1-0 win, while Belgium had overcome the USA with a 4-1 scoreline to reach this stage.

Match details and key moments

The match saw a significant turn of events when Belgium’s goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois, was forced off the field due to a thigh injury with about 20 minutes remaining. His replacement, Senne Lammens, subsequently made an error, spilling a long-range effort from Pau Cubarsi directly into Merino’s path, leading to the decisive goal.

Senne Lammens spilled straight into the path of Mikel Merino in the 88th minute(Getty) Credit: independent.co.uk

Before the injury, Belgium had faced an early setback when captain Youri Tielemans sustained a hamstring injury during the warm-up. Despite this, Belgium started strongly, with Jeremy Doku and Kevin De Bruyne, who were surprise omissions from the previous starting lineup, returning to the squad. Doku posed a constant threat on the break.

Spain took the lead after approximately half an hour. Pedro Porro and Lamine Yamal combined on the right, setting up Dani Olmo, whose shot was saved by Courtois. However, the rebound fell to Fabian Ruiz, who scored. This goal marked a continuation of Spain’s strong form in matches where Ruiz has featured.

Just four minutes before the interval, Belgium equalised. Charles De Ketelaere scored from a cross by Timothy Castagne, with De Bruyne initiating the move with a pass. This goal ended Spain’s run of not conceding for 650 World Cup minutes.

Second half and aftermath

The second half was closely contested, with both teams creating opportunities. Yamal had a shot that went wide, and Belgium’s Maxim De Cuyper also had a chance. Spain’s coach, Luis de la Fuente, made a double substitution, bringing on Ferran Torres and Pedri to influence the game.

Belgium continued to pose a threat on the counterattack, particularly after Romelu Lukaku entered the game. A moment of controversy arose when a shot appeared to strike Rodri‘s hand, but no penalty was awarded. As the match neared its conclusion, with extra time looming, Belgium’s defence dropped deeper.

The pivotal moment arrived when Cubarsi’s shot led to Lammens’ error, allowing Merino to score the winning goal. The match was broadcast by the BBC, with Kelly Cates presenting. Pundits for the coverage included Wayne Rooney, Micah Richards, and former Spain international Cesar Azpilicueta. Steve Wilson provided the main commentary, joined by Stephen Warnock as co-commentator.

The victory ensures Spain’s progression to face France in the semi-finals.

Jannik Sinner has defeated Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon semi-finals, ending Djokovic’s pursuit of a standalone record 25th Grand Slam title. Sinner will now face Alexander Zverev in the final.

Sinner delivered a powerful and precise performance, denying Djokovic’s attempt to equal Roger Federer’s record of eight men’s singles titles at the All England Club. Djokovic, who is 39, did not manage to secure a break point until the third set, which Sinner saved with an ace. Sinner ultimately won the match with a score of 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.

This victory marks Sinner’s progression to the Wimbledon final. He is one win away from potentially becoming the 10th man in the Open era to retain the Wimbledon title. Sinner will enter Sunday’s final as a strong contender, particularly after his decisive performance against Djokovic.

Djokovic reflects on semi-final exit

For Djokovic, reaching a Grand Slam semi-final at his age, especially after a demanding five-hour and 15-minute match against an opponent 14 years his junior, demonstrates his continued high-level play. However, he acknowledged that his performance against Sinner was “good but not good enough.”

Djokovic expressed his high expectations for himself, stating, “I’m blessed and cursed to be used to something of a highest degree in terms of results and achievements.” He noted that while he can still play at a high level and challenge younger players, he always aims for the best results.

Unlike last year’s semi-final encounter with Sinner, Djokovic confirmed he was not carrying an injury this time. However, he mentioned the impact of another year and significant court time on his body, particularly after his five-set victory over Felix Auger-Aliassime in the previous round.

Former world number one Andre Agassi commented on the nature of the sport, saying, “In this sport, as in life, hope is fragile but hard to kill.” Djokovic himself stated he felt “physically all right” but acknowledged Sinner was the “much better player” and the “dominant force.”

Pat Cash, the 1987 Wimbledon champion, suggested that this might have been Djokovic’s best opportunity for a 25th Grand Slam title. He added, “I don’t think realistically he has got another Grand Slam in him, unfortunately. I think this was the one.” Cash also noted that while Djokovic could still be a threat, he might not go “all the way.”

Djokovic maintained a high level during his quarter-final win against Auger-Aliassime, but it appeared to have taken a toll. Against Sinner, he seemed slightly slower, particularly on his forehand, and struggled to return Sinner’s accurate and powerful serves. He created only one break-point opportunity, which Sinner saved with an ace.

Despite the loss, Djokovic hopes to return to Wimbledon “at least once more.” He continues to compete effectively against younger players. He will be 40 by the time of next year’s Wimbledon. The oldest man to win a Grand Slam singles title in the Open era was Ken Rosewall, at 39 years and 234 days.

Sinner’s path to the final

Sinner’s performance against Djokovic showcased his exceptional form. He did not drop a set since his opening match and demonstrated his best tennis of the tournament in the semi-final. His serving was particularly strong, with 16 aces recorded on Friday.

Sinner will face Zverev in the final. While Sinner has a strong head-to-head record against Zverev, having won 10 of their 14 previous meetings, he acknowledges that Zverev is a different player after winning his first major title at the French Open. Sinner expressed his happiness with his performance and his return to the finals, hoping for a good final on Sunday.

The Centre Court crowd showed significant support for Djokovic during the match, chanting his nickname “Nole! Nole!” when he faced break points. Djokovic acknowledged the crowd’s appreciation as he left the court, placing his hand over his heart and waving. He has been a crowd favourite in almost every match at this year’s championships, a shift from previous years where he sometimes received a more hostile reception.

Agassi observed the crowd’s chants for Djokovic, noting, “He’s now getting the respect he deserves.” He added that the achievements of current players are influenced by what Djokovic has shown is possible in the sport. Djokovic stated he feels no pressure to play and does so because he wants to and believes he can still perform as a top-five player.

Sinner’s victory over Djokovic was achieved in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.

Fight-card reading starts with matchup context, not with the loudest opinion on the card. UFC tips are more useful when they explain striking range, wrestling pressure, cardio and late changes before the market is judged. A reader should also check whether the bout order, weight-cut news or replacement information has changed the original view. The same fight can look different after weigh-ins if one athlete appears drained, misses weight or faces a late opponent switch. Market movement matters only when it matches the technical case, not when it follows public attention alone. UFC predictions can support a betting decision, but they should still show where uncertainty remains. Before any GBP stake is placed, the reader should decide whether the price matches the risk.

Fight markets, prices and risk before staking

Market choice matters because the same fighter can look interesting in one market and overpriced in another. UFC betting usually begins with the moneyline, but props such as method, rounds and totals can change the risk sharply. UFC odds show the market view, not the full fight story. A bettor should compare the price with style, form and recent fight context. UFC tips should also explain when a pass is better than forcing action on a difficult price. UFC betting should stay linked to evidence rather than noise. When the line moves quickly, the reason should be checked before reacting.

Reading moneyline prices before choosing a market

Moneyline markets ask only which fighter wins, but the answer is rarely simple. UFC odds can show a favourite and an underdog, yet the stronger fighter is not always the better betting position. A wide line may hide risk if the favourite has weak takedown defence or questionable cardio. A close line may show uncertainty, but it can also create room for sharper matchup analysis. Analysis should avoid treating favourites as automatic value.

Market type

What it measures

Fighter data to review

GBP caution

Reader action

Moneyline

Fight winner

Style and recent form

Avoid heavy favourites

Compare price with risk

Method

How the fight ends

KO, submission, decision paths

Smaller stake

Check finishing history

Round betting

Timing of result

Pace and durability

High variance

Use carefully

Totals

Fight duration

Cardio and damage history

Watch price

Compare round pace

Method markets and specific outcome risk

A moneyline view becomes more fragile when the user moves into exact outcomes. UFC betting works better when the market matches the likely fight path. A UFC bet on method needs a clear finishing route, not just confidence in one fighter. A striker may win by knockout, decision or late pressure, and each path has a different price. Grapplers can dominate control time without finding a submission, which changes the value of method markets. Smaller GBP stakes are usually more sensible when the outcome depends on a narrow scenario.

Fighter analysis for stronger UFC predictions

Useful fight analysis begins with style and recent evidence. UFC predictions should compare striking defence, takedown threat, submission danger, cardio and durability. A fighter’s record can help, but opposition level and damage history matter just as much. UFC picks are stronger when they explain how the winner is expected to control the fight. The preview should also show what could make the selection fail.

Using fight picks without ignoring matchup uncertainty

A pick should not hide the weaker side of the argument. UFC picks can be useful when they explain both the advantage and the danger in the matchup. A pressure wrestler may look reliable until facing an opponent with strong takedown defence and clean counters. A knockout artist may carry danger but lose minutes if the other fighter controls range. UFC tips should still mention the losing path, because that is where the real risk usually appears.

Striking: Compare volume, defence, range control and damage absorbed.

Grappling: Review takedown threat, control time and submission risk.

Cardio: Check whether later rounds can change the fight reading.

Durability: Consider damage history, recovery and recent stoppages.

Context: Note camp changes, short notice, travel and weight-cut concerns.

This method makes UFC tips more practical because it shows how a fight can go wrong. It also stops one strong advantage from becoming the whole argument.

Injury, camp and short-notice context

Preparation can change how a fighter looks on paper. UFC predictions become weaker when they ignore injuries, layoffs, late replacements or difficult weight cuts. A camp change can affect cardio, wrestling defence and game-plan discipline. UFC predictions should be checked again if fight-week information changes. The reader should treat incomplete news carefully, especially when a fighter returns from a layoff.

MMA betting risk checks and card discipline

Risk control should be part of the preview, not an afterthought. UFC betting tips should explain why a market fits the matchup and why it may still lose. MMA betting is volatile because finishes, fouls, judging and injuries can change the result quickly. Even a strong read can fail if the opening minute creates a different fight than expected. UFC betting should not turn one technical edge into an oversized stake. A useful guide keeps confidence and stake size separate.

Style matchups for takedowns, distance and cage control

Style decides whether a fighter can use their best weapons. UFC betting tips should compare range, clinch control, takedown entries and ground defence before a market is chosen. A striker with good footwork may avoid danger. A wrestler can slow the tempo with pressure. Cage control can also affect judging when rounds are close. A clean matchup note should show which fighter can impose the first phase of the fight. It should also explain what changes if the first plan fails after the opening exchanges.

Bankroll discipline when staking in GBP

A good read still needs a fixed limit. MMA betting should begin with a GBP budget, not with the most confident opinion on the card. Fight outcomes can change through cuts, judging, fatigue or one mistake in a scramble. A bettor should avoid raising the stake because a line moves late. Smaller, planned stakes make the card easier to review after the event. Long-term discipline matters more than chasing one dramatic fight.

Weigh-in signals before fight-night decisions

Fight week can change the quality of a pick. UFC betting tips should be checked again after weigh-ins, faceoffs and late news. A missed weight can signal preparation problems, but overreacting to staredowns is also risky. Odds movement may reflect real information or simple public pressure.

Weigh-in: Check whether both fighters made weight and looked stable.

Faceoff: Note body language, but do not overread promotion theatre.

Replacement: Compare any late opponent change with the original analysis.

Market: Watch line movement without chasing every price shift.

Stake: Set the GBP amount before the first fight starts.

This order keeps UFC tips tied to useful information. It also helps the reader avoid emotional decisions during fight night.

Fight-night updates, odds movement and selection value

Fight-night content needs extra caution because cards can change late. UFC predictions tonight should be checked against the final bout order, weigh-in result and any confirmed replacement news. UFC odds may move quickly when public money arrives, but a shorter price does not automatically improve value. Best UFC bets should be framed as reasoned positions, not safe outcomes. A sensible preview explains what supports the bet and what can break it.

Card changes before final predictions

Late changes can alter more than one market. UFC predictions tonight should be reviewed when a bout is moved, cancelled or changed in length. A replacement fighter can change pace, stance matchup and grappling risk. UFC tips should be updated when the current card no longer matches the original preview. Even the main-card order can affect preparation routines. UFC betting tips should explain what changed and whether the original angle still holds.

Opening lines compared with current market prices

Opening lines can show the first market view, while later prices show how bettors responded. UFC odds should be compared with the first available price, the current line and the reason for movement. If the edge disappears, the selection may no longer be worth the risk. A strong pick at one price can become ordinary at another. Best UFC bets need that comparison before they are treated as serious options.

Pros

Cons

Comparing opening and current lines helps readers see whether the market has already removed value.

Late card changes can weaken analysis if the fight conditions shift after the first preview.

Matchup-based notes connect price movement with striking, grappling, cardio and durability factors.

MMA outcomes remain volatile because one mistake, injury or judging swing can change the result.

GBP stake planning helps separate a strong opinion from an oversized emotional bet.

–

Market comparison can show when a pass is better than forcing action on every fight.

–

Main event props and undercard value checks carefully

Main events attract attention, but undercards can sometimes offer cleaner reads. A prop should be checked through the fighter’s win condition, not only through the price. Method and round markets need more caution because they require a narrow outcome. UFC predictions tonight can include props, but only when the path is clear enough. If the fight has too many uncertain routes, the safer decision may be to skip the market.

FAQ about fight-card reading and betting control

How should beginners read prices before staking?

Beginners should first identify whether the market is moneyline, method, rounds or totals. UFC odds should be compared with fighter style, recent form and risk, not read as a prediction by themselves. A short favourite can still be poor value if the matchup is dangerous. UFC betting can become easier to manage when the reader knows which market is being used. The stake should stay small until the reader understands how each market works.

What makes analysis stronger than simple picks?

Stronger analysis explains why a fighter has a path to win and what could stop it. UFC predictions should include striking, grappling, cardio, durability and recent context. Simple picks can be too thin when they only name a winner. UFC picks should also show what happens if the favourite cannot control range or tempo. A useful preview shows the risk as clearly as the selection.

How can a card stay controlled with GBP?

A bettor should choose the GBP stake before looking at late market movement. MMA betting becomes riskier when the user raises stakes after emotional reactions. Limits, pauses and skipped fights are part of disciplined card reading. UFC tips should also be checked against the same budget rule, not treated as a reason to increase exposure. If a market feels unclear, avoiding it is a valid choice.

When should a tip be avoided before fights?

A tip should be avoided when the reasoning is vague, outdated or too dependent on hype. UFC tips also become weaker if injury news, weigh-in issues or late opponent changes are ignored. UFC predictions should be reviewed again when the current card no longer matches the original analysis. A UFC bet should not be placed just because a fighter is popular. Careful readers wait for evidence that still fits the current card.

The Genesis Scottish Open saw a competitive start, with Rory McIlroy among five players sharing the early lead after the opening round. The tournament, held at The Renaissance Club, featured a crowded leaderboard, indicating a closely contested event.

McIlroy, making his first appearance since the US Open, recorded a five-under 65. This placed him at the top alongside Patrick Cantlay, Rasmus Hojgaard, Tom Kim, and Bernd Wiesberger. McIlroy’s round included an eagle, five birdies, and two bogeys, three years after his previous victory at the event.

Scottie Scheffler is also in contention, positioned three shots behind the leaders. Other notable players, such as Brooks Koepka, are just one shot off the pace. The leaderboard remains tight, with a significant number of players closely grouped.

Opening Round Highlights

McIlroy’s performance on the opening day demonstrated strong play, particularly with his driving. He began his round on the back nine, where he bogeyed his first hole. However, he quickly recovered with a two-putt birdie at the par-five 12th, followed by additional shots gained at the 14th and 16th holes.

Despite failing to save par at the 18th, McIlroy secured an 18-foot eagle at the par-five first hole. He continued to create scoring opportunities throughout his round, finding back-to-back gains from the seventh hole. McIlroy noted his effective driving, stating it allowed him to attack the course and set up chances for scoring.

Patrick Cantlay also had a strong start, achieving five birdies in a bogey-free round. Bernd Wiesberger briefly held the solo lead before a bogey on the penultimate hole. Tom Kim completed the group of five leaders with his five-under 65.

Scheffler, who will be looking to defend his title at The Open next week, finished his round with a two-under 68. His performance included four birdies and two bogeys. Scheffler expressed satisfaction with some aspects of his play but noted that he wished he could have gained a few more shots, particularly on the par-fives, and preferred a cleaner scorecard.

The leaderboard shows 71 players separated by just five strokes after the initial round, highlighting the competitive nature of the tournament. Matt Fitzpatrick and Tommy Fleetwood are in a group two shots behind the leaders, which also includes local favourite Bob MacIntyre and US Open champion Wyndham Clark. Clark is within two shots of the lead despite recording a double-bogey and a bogey within his first four holes.

Hojgaard’s Day Two Progress

Rasmus Hojgaard, one of the overnight leaders, experienced a mixed start to his second day. After a wayward tee shot on the 11th hole, he found himself in thick rough. His second shot then went off to the left of the green, making it difficult to secure a par.

Hojgaard was unable to make par on the 11th, resulting in a bogey. This was a setback after he had reached six under earlier in the morning. However, he demonstrated resilience by bouncing back on the 12th hole with an excellent birdie.

In the opening round, Hojgaard had reached six under before a double-bogey on the par-four 16th halted his progress. He was the top performer in the afternoon wave on day one, securing a birdie on the par-three 17th, though he could not find another birdie on the final hole to reclaim the top spot.

The tournament continues to be closely watched, with live coverage available on Friday from 8:30 am.
