Hourihane leaving barnsley head coach

When Conor Hourihane took the reins at Barnsley in March 2025, hopes were high. The club had reached the play-offs in both 2023 and 2024, and there was optimism about a successful campaign in League One. However, that optimism has faded as Barnsley currently sits 12th, a troubling 12 points outside the play-off places.

Now, in a surprising turn of events, it has been announced that Hourihane will leave his position at the end of the season by mutual agreement. This decision comes after an honest conversation between Hourihane and the board, as noted by club chairman Jon Flatman. “After honest conversations between the board and Conor, it was felt that the best course of action for both parties would be to pursue a fresh start ahead of preparations for the 2026-27 season,” Flatman stated.

Hourihane’s tenure has seen mixed results. Under his leadership, Barnsley won only 14 of their 42 league games this season. This disappointing performance led to a net loss of over £6.5 million for the club in the last financial year—a stark contrast to his earlier success when he captained Barnsley to an EFL Trophy and League One promotion double in 2016.

Reflecting on his departure, Hourihane expressed respect for everyone involved at Barnsley: “There’s great respect between me, club, board, fans, everyone involved, and we felt that at the end of the season, it was probably the right time just to part ways.” He aims to leave on good terms with his final game set against Stockport County on May 2.

This marks yet another chapter in Barnsley’s ongoing struggles—this is their fourth successive season in the third tier of English football. Fans are left wondering what comes next for their beloved club.

As Hourihane steps away from coaching duties, he leaves behind a legacy of 31 goals in 135 appearances during his first spell at Barnsley and a commendable international career with 36 caps for the Republic of Ireland.

The decision appears to be a strategic move by both parties as they look toward rebuilding. But with uncertainty still looming over who will take over next and how Barnsley will navigate these turbulent waters, one thing is clear: change is on the horizon.
