London Marathon Results: Sabastian Sawe Makes History

Sabastian Sawe achieved a historic milestone at the London Marathon, finishing in an astonishing 1:59:30. This marks the first time an athlete has officially completed a marathon in under two hours during a competitive race.

Sawe’s remarkable feat broke the previous record of 2:00:35 set by Kelvin Kiptum earlier this year. Yomif Kejelcha followed closely behind, finishing as the runner-up with a time of 1:59:41, making him the second man to break the two-hour barrier in race conditions. Jacob Kiplimo rounded out the podium with a swift 2:00:28—also faster than Kiptum’s former record.

“I am feeling good. I am so happy. It is a day to remember for me,” Sawe shared after crossing the finish line. His achievement is part of a growing trend among elite marathon runners pushing the boundaries of what is possible in distance running.

The London Marathon has long been a stage for both elite athletes and amateur runners alike. This year, around 56,000 amateur participants took to the streets of London, many running for charity. Toby Freeman, who finished in 4:49:18, expressed his emotional connection to the race, saying, “I was thinking of my brother, who passed away, and how it was a privilege to just be running.”

In addition to Sawe’s record-breaking run, notable figures like Sebastian Vettel completed their first marathons—Vettel finishing in 2:59:08—and fitness influencer Joe Wicks participated last year with a time of 5:54:59.

The London Marathon’s history is rich with milestones. The first man to run under two hours was Eliud Kipchoge in 2019; however, that event did not qualify as an official record due to controlled conditions. Now, with Sawe’s achievement, it raises questions about what other records might be shattered in future races.

Looking ahead, organizers are considering holding the London Marathon over two days starting next year—a move that could accommodate even more participants and create an even larger community celebration around this iconic event.
