As the holiday season approaches, Martin Lewis cautions that travelers could face significant financial losses if their flights are canceled and they booked their hotel separately. This situation is particularly concerning for those who may not have adequate travel insurance to cover such cancellations.
The risk of losing hotel costs arises when flights are canceled due to issues like jet fuel shortages. Martin emphasizes that when flights and accommodations are booked separately, the protections under consumer laws do not apply. “If you booked a package holiday where you booked everything in one, then under the package holiday regulations and rules and protections generally if your flight went you would get everything back,” he explains.
Lewis points out a critical gap in consumer protection: if a flight is canceled, there is nothing inherently wrong with the hotel booking itself. Thus, many travelers might find themselves out of pocket without recourse. He highlights that only a few travel insurance policies cover hotel costs in cases of flight cancellations due to jet fuel issues—”only about three or four and most of those were package bank accounts where it’s linked to your bank account,” he notes.
To mitigate these risks, Lewis recommends booking accommodations with free or limited cancellation options. This way, travelers can safeguard their finances against unexpected changes in their travel plans. He states, “There is a big risk in those circumstances.” As a precaution, he advises connecting with your provider to clarify your options before committing to bookings.
Adding to the urgency of his message, Lewis mentions that upcoming strikes in Belgium on May 12 could lead to widespread travel disruptions, including more flight cancellations. Such strikes often involve security staff, baggage handlers, and ground crews—all critical roles that can impact flight schedules significantly.
With many people planning trips during peak seasons, being informed about the nuances of travel insurance and consumer rights is vital. Travelers should consider the benefits of package holidays over DIY bookings for added security under consumer protection laws.
As the situation develops, holidaymakers are encouraged to stay updated on potential disruptions and review their travel plans carefully. Being proactive now could save them from unexpected costs later on.
