What Happened
Last week, Brighton and Hove City Council confirmed the establishment of new coach parking on Stroudley Road, near Brighton Station, following complaints from residents living on Old Steine. The decision comes after the National Express coach station was relocated from Pool Valley to various bus stops around Old Steine due to the Royal Albion fire and the Valley Gardens regeneration project.
Why It Matters
Residents, including Gary Farmer, a long-term local and former chair of the Brighton Reform group, have expressed dissatisfaction with the new arrangement. Farmer noted that the new stop is “not being used” and that coaches continue to pick up from Old Steine, causing ongoing noise issues. He reported being informed that there is “no intention” for coaches to utilize the Stroudley Road location, citing concerns over additional journey time and costs.
What’s Next
National Express has confirmed that it will continue to operate from Old Steine due to “operational requirements.” A spokeswoman for the company stated that they are working closely with Brighton & Hove City Council as changes to coach facilities are implemented across the city. The situation remains fluid, and further discussions between the council and National Express may be necessary to address residents’ concerns.
