In a surprising turn of events, two lucky savers became millionaires overnight during the May 2026 Premium Bonds prize draw. One winner hails from Suffolk, while the other is from the picturesque Highlands and Islands region of Scotland. This announcement comes amid a scandal that has affected bereaved families trying to access their Premium Bonds.
The winners were revealed on May 1, 2026. The first £1 million winner, with bond number 567VN857011, purchased their bonds in January 2024. Meanwhile, the second winner from the Highlands and Islands holds bond number 643SE292364, bought in September 2025.
Across the UK, the total amount won in May’s draw reached an impressive £1,819,000. In total, there were 5,947,523 prizes drawn worth a staggering £376,180,825. However, it’s worth noting that the odds of winning any prize stand at around 23,000 to 1 for each £1 saved in Premium Bonds.
Premium Bonds are unique as they do not accrue interest but rather function as a cash lottery. Each month, bondholders eagerly check their results using various methods. Andrew Westhead from NS&I advises that “the quickest way to check if you have won a prize is to use our Premium Bonds prize checker app or even ask Alexa from the second working day of each month onwards.”
Despite this excitement surrounding winnings, NS&I recently faced scrutiny due to delays impacting around 37,500 individuals, particularly bereaved families who struggled to access their funds. Dan Coatsworth highlighted that “trust is incredibly important in financial services,” suggesting that these operational failures might affect how savers view NS&I.
Interestingly, both jackpot winners will soon receive a visit from Agent Million—an anonymous NS&I employee who travels across the country to inform new millionaires of their good fortune. This personal touch adds an element of excitement and surprise for those fortunate enough to win.
While millions of unclaimed Premium Bonds prizes remain out there, the allure of winning keeps many hopeful. With over 99% of prizes paid to winners since draws began in 1957, many continue to invest in this unique savings scheme.
