RAF personnel from RAF Leeming took part in Anzac Day ceremonies in Harrogate, England, honoring the sacrifices of military servicemen and women. This year’s observance also marks the 40th anniversary of Operation El Dorado Canyon, a significant military operation.
The ceremony honored 97 Royal Australian Air Force and 23 Royal New Zealand Air Force servicemen who lost their lives. Wing Commander David Buckingham expressed pride, stating, “It was an honour to represent Royal Air Force Leeming at the Anzac Day Ceremony.” The event underscores the ongoing recognition of military sacrifices across generations.
Meanwhile, at RAF Lakenheath, an F-15E Strike Eagle was painted to commemorate Operation El Dorado Canyon, which was a response to the bombing of the La Belle discotheque in West Berlin. This visual tribute connects past operations with current military engagements.
In recent weeks, RAF forces have been active in the Middle East conflict, where they intercepted over 100 Iranian drones and missiles at a coalition base. Daily attacks from Iran linked to these operations included as many as 28 drones and missiles targeting the base. Al Carns, a coalition partner, remarked on the significance of RAF efforts: “The base would probably be a smouldering wreck if it wasn’t for you guys.”
The Ministry of Defence is currently discussing plans to expand the UK’s counter-drone capabilities amid ongoing threats. Air Chief Marshal Harv Smyth confirmed this initiative, saying, “Yes, that’s definitely a discussion that we’re having.” This reflects a proactive approach to modern threats faced by military forces today.
