Travel: Carlisle Improvements: Community Input Sought

Cumberland Council is embarking on an initiative to enhance travel in Carlisle, focusing on The Crescent and Warwick Road. This effort is part of a broader ambition to consider future Active Travel schemes across the area, aiming to create more accessible and people-friendly streets.

As part of this initiative, the council is currently conducting initial assessments and preparing preliminary design concepts. The goal is to support healthier lifestyles and improve access to key destinations within the city.

A public drop-in session is scheduled for April 15, 2026, from 3 PM to 6 PM at The Mail Exchange, The Halston, Carlisle. This event will provide residents and local businesses an opportunity to share their insights and suggestions regarding the proposed travel improvements.

Cumberland Councillor Denise Rollo emphasized the importance of community input, stating, “Exploring possible improvements on The Crescent and Warwick Road is about understanding what local people need from their city centre.” This sentiment reflects the council’s commitment to ensuring that the voices of those who live and work in Carlisle are heard and considered in the planning process.

For those unable to attend the public drop-in event, a survey will be available to gather additional feedback. This inclusive approach aims to ensure that all community members have a chance to contribute to the conversation about the future of travel in Carlisle.

However, it is important to note that nothing is currently set in a construction timetable; as Councillor Rollo pointed out, “this is simply the very first step.” Observers are encouraged to stay engaged as the council moves forward with assessments and gathers community feedback.

As the project develops, officials anticipate that the insights collected will shape the design and implementation of the travel improvements, ultimately fostering a healthier and more accessible environment for all residents and visitors in Carlisle.
