The Tuapse oil refinery has faced repeated drone strikes, significantly impacting Russia’s oil production and prompting emergency evacuations. This facility, located in Tuapse, Russia, has been targeted by Ukrainian military drones for the third time in less than two weeks.
The latest strike on April 29 caused a “massive fire” that forced nearby residents to evacuate. The situation escalated quickly, with dense black smoke rising from the refinery, alarming local communities.
With an annual production capacity of about 12 million tonnes and approximately 240,000 barrels of oil products produced daily, the Tuapse refinery plays a crucial role in the Russian oil industry. However, it halted production on April 16 due to prior damage from earlier drone attacks.
At least three people have been reported killed as a result of these strikes. An oil spill occurred at sea following one of the attacks, raising concerns about environmental consequences.
Vladimir Putin condemned these actions, stating, “The latest example is the strike against energy facilities in Tuapse.” He noted that drone attacks against civilian infrastructure are becoming more frequent.
Aleksandr Kurenkov, the Minister of Emergency Situations, described the situation as complicated but controllable. Local authorities are currently focused on firefighting efforts and ensuring the safety of residents.
The Ukrainian military aims to disrupt funding for the war by targeting Russian oil facilities like Tuapse. As tensions continue to rise, officials have not disclosed any timeline for when normal operations might resume.
The ongoing conflict and its repercussions on local communities highlight the fragile state of both safety and environmental health in regions affected by such military actions.
