Virgin media: UK Warns of AI-Generated Fraud Risks

Virgin Media O2 has raised an urgent alarm about the rise of fraud involving AI-generated customer service numbers. Millions of consumers across the UK risk falling prey to scams as criminals exploit these advanced tools. The warning comes amid growing concerns over telecom security and fraud prevention.

Recent data reveals that around 1 in 10 people trust phone numbers generated by AI. Alarmingly, 15% of Brits never verify if a number is legitimate before calling. This lack of caution leaves many vulnerable.

In fact, 13% of Brits reported encountering fake customer service numbers through search engines or chatbots. The issue seems particularly prevalent among younger generations, with 27% of older Gen Z and Millennials aged 25–34 having faced similar scams.

Murray Mackenzie from Virgin Media O2 stated, “Criminals know when people search for help, they’re often looking for a quick answer.” He added that AI tools create new opportunities for fraudsters to present realistic-looking fake numbers, putting consumers at risk.

The company has flagged more than 1 billion suspicious calls to customers before they even pick up the phone. Additionally, they’ve blocked an equal number of scam text messages aimed at deceiving users.

Despite these efforts, 22% of consumers remain unsure whether the numbers they encounter online are genuine. This uncertainty highlights the urgent need for scam awareness and education.

To combat this issue, Virgin Media O2 is investing heavily in anti-fraud technology. They urge customers to report suspicious numbers to 7726 and recommend using only official customer service numbers found on company websites or bills.

The rise in fraudulent activities showcases a broader trend where fraudsters manipulate AI-driven search results to provide convincing—but ultimately deceptive—contact details for well-known brands.

The message is clear: vigilance is essential. As Murray Mackenzie emphasized, “Always use customer service numbers listed on official company websites, apps or on your bill.” Taking these steps can help protect consumers from falling victim to these sophisticated scams.
