Wimbledon men’s singles final: Sinner to defend title against Zverev

Sinner’s Path to the Final

Jannik Sinner is set to defend his Wimbledon title in the men’s singles final on Sunday. The world number one secured his place by defeating Novak Djokovic in straight sets during their semi-final match on Friday. This victory marked the end of Djokovic’s bid for a record 25th Grand Slam title. Sinner’s performance against Djokovic was described as ruthless, with the Italian winning 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.

Sinner will be aiming for his fifth Grand Slam title. He has shown strong form throughout the tournament, not losing a set since his first-round match against Miomir Kecmanovic, where he was pushed to five sets. Despite this, there has been a perception that Sinner is not yet at his absolute peak.

Zverev’s Journey and Challenge

Alexander Zverev, the second seed, earned his spot in the final by overcoming British wildcard Arthur Fery. Zverev’s dominant performance saw him win 7-6 (7-0), 6-2, 6-4, making him the first German man to reach the Wimbledon singles final since Boris Becker in 1995. Zverev’s win ended Fery’s unexpected run in the tournament.

Zverev will be seeking to complete a French Open-Wimbledon double, having won his maiden Grand Slam at the French Open last month. He noted that winning a major title provides a sense of knowing how to achieve it again and that his game has improved significantly. Zverev enters the final with an 11-match winning streak at Grand Slams.

The upcoming final presents a significant challenge for Zverev, as Sinner has won their last nine encounters, including 14 consecutive sets. Zverev’s last victory against Sinner was in 2023 at the US Open, a five-set match that concluded in the early hours of the morning in New York.

Sinner acknowledged Zverev’s aggressive play and confidence, stating, “He is very, very aggressive at the moment. His confidence is good. He’s very relaxed on court at the moment, so this is good.”

Djokovic’s Future Plans

Following his semi-final defeat, Novak Djokovic indicated his intention to return to Wimbledon in 2027. He admitted that Sinner outplayed him, particularly in intensity, power, and consistency. Djokovic, who has 24 Grand Slam titles, expressed frustration with ongoing discussions about him winning a 25th Grand Slam, stating he is “sick” and “annoyed” by the talk.

Djokovic reflected on his performance, acknowledging Sinner was a level above him. He noted, “I was just half a step late basically in any shot… He was just a level better than I was.” Despite the loss, Djokovic maintained pride in his Wimbledon campaign, referencing his quarter-final victory over Felix Auger-Aliassime, who is ranked among the top players globally. He believes his run demonstrated his continued ability to compete at the highest level.

Djokovic emphasized that winning a 25th Grand Slam is not his “ultimate goal,” despite external pressure. He stated, “Let’s celebrate and rejoice for what has been achieved and be a little more modest, realistic and grateful in that sense.” He also expressed that he still enjoys the thrill of competition, though the physical demands of preparing for major tournaments are challenging. Djokovic believes that when healthy, he can still play as a top-five player. His focus now is on recovery and determining the next steps in his career, with a return to SW19 in 2027 remaining a possibility.

Final Match-up Dynamics

The final is expected to feature a battle of powerful serves. Zverev, standing 6ft 6in, is known for his strong first serve, which is well-suited to grass courts. Sinner also possesses a formidable serve, having recorded 113 aces in this year’s tournament, an increase from his 62 aces in 2025. Sinner commented on the expected nature of the final, suggesting “less exchanges, less rhythm” due to the fast surface and warm conditions, which would benefit a big server.

Zverev is focused on trying to become the seventh man in the Open Era to win both the French Open and Wimbledon in the same year. He stated, “I stay focused. I stay hungry. I want more.” The final is scheduled for Sunday, July 12, 2026.
