Bristol orphanage to be redeveloped by Opco for Charles Church in £5.5m scheme16th July 2012

Allen House, a Grade II listed former orphanage in Ashley Down Road, Bristol, is to be converted by opco into apartments in a £5.5m scheme by national house builder Charles Church.

The Allen House orphanage, which most recently was part of the City of Bristol’s Brunel Campus, was built by a 19th century Prussian philanthropist, George Muller, from private donations.

The 60 week project involves the total renovation and conversion of Allen House, which dates from the 1850’s, into 43 one, two and three bed apartments, of which 39 will be within the Grade II listed building and four will be new build.

The scheme will see the roof of the orphanage replaced, external envelope repairs, part new build works, fit-out works and associated external works, including landscapes courtyards between the wings.

opco Regional Director Nigel Coulter said: “We’re very happy to be working once more with Charles Church. The Allen House project will involve the sympathetic conversion of an extremely important building for Bristol both in terms of its listed architecture and its social and historical significance.”

The employers agent on the project is Hibberd Associates, architects are AWW Bristol; structural engineers are RVW Consulting and services engineers Whitehead BS and CMB Engineering.
