Work has begun to turn the former Police Station in Ware Road, Hertford, into a development of 132 high-quality affordable homes.
Development of the site is being led by Barratt North London, who are working in partnership with Riversmead Housing Association, the affordable housing partner for the scheme. Progress on the site had previously stalled in 2011 following a dispute between the original developers and the owners of the site, Hertford Police Authority.
Riversmead, part of the Network Housing Group, is now working alongside Barratt on the scheme for the delivery of the affordable element of the scheme, totalling 59 homes.
Phase 1, which is scheduled for completion in December 2014, will see nine homes available for shared ownership and 16 offered on an affordable rental basis. Phase 2 will see a further 34 homes completed and work is scheduled to begin on these homes later this year.
The scheme will comprise two four-storey blocks, with each apartment having its own balcony, except for those situated on the ground floor.
Network Housing Group’s Business Development Director, Jeremy Stibbe, said: “These new homes, which meet the code for Sustainable Homes Level 3, will provide much needed accommodation for people in Hertford looking to get on the property ladder as well as those looking to rent.
“The development, Liberty Rise, will create a new and vibrant commuter hub for City workers, with London Liverpool Street and Kings Cross stations less than 50 minutes away. It is in a prime location on Ware Road, just east of Hertford town centre and less than one mile from East Hertford train station.”
Paul Huckstep, Executive Director of Riversmead, said: “This development is a key milestone in the expansion and growth of Hertford. There is a great need for new affordable homes in this area and Riversmead is committed to working with the local council and other developers to deliver new homes.
“The site has been sitting empty and unused for three years and we are pleased to see this development get underway.”
