Talbot Green in South Wales is to get a 116,000 sq ft Sainsbury's supermarket as part of its £200 million town centre development. Work is due to commence on site in autumn 2014.
Talbot Green Developments Ltd, which is a joint venture between Valad Europe and Scarborough Development Group, has obtained detailed planning consent and exchanged contracts with Sainsbury's for the new supermarket, which will be part of the town's 380,000 sq ft development. This is being carried out on mainly brownfield land and will include retail space, a leisure and entertainment quarter, restaurants, bars, a hotel, as well as civic and community facilities, residential apartments and townhouses.
Ben Littman, Sainsbury’s Development Manager for Wales, said: “We are delighted that our store will complement the new retail, leisure and housing to be built for the town. At our public information day in 2012, more than 95% of attendees said they wanted to see a Sainsbury’s in Talbot Green, so this is clearly popular with the local community.”
Andy Richardson, Head of UK Development for Valad Europe, commented: “Securing consent for the development of a Sainsbury’s store marks a significant milestone for the first phase of the Talbot Green development programme.”
