Australia and Paraguay vie for World Cup knockout stage spot

Crucial Group D encounter

Australia and Paraguay are set to face each other in their final World Cup 2026 group stage match, with automatic qualification for the knockout rounds on the line for one of the teams. The match is a decisive fixture in Group D, where the outcome will determine which nation progresses directly.

Australia began their campaign with a 2-0 victory over Turkey. However, they subsequently suffered a 2-0 defeat against co-hosts USA. Paraguay, on the other hand, started with a 4-1 loss to USA but then secured a 1-0 win against Turkey, despite playing with 10 men.

The USA has already secured the top spot in Group D and qualified for the knockout stage. Turkey has been eliminated from the competition. This leaves Australia and Paraguay competing for the second qualification spot, or a chance to advance as one of the best third-placed teams.

Qualification scenarios

The winner of the match between Australia and Paraguay will guarantee their place in the knockout stages, finishing with six points. The losing team, with three points, would then have to await other results to see if they qualify as one of the eight best third-placed nations in the tournament.

Should the match end in a draw, both Australia and Paraguay would finish with four points. In this scenario, goal difference would become the deciding factor, as the head-to-head record would be a draw. Australia’s current goal difference is 0, while Paraguay’s is -2. With these figures remaining the same in a draw, Australia would qualify in second place. Paraguay would then need to rely on other results to determine if their four points are sufficient for a third-place qualification spot, which is considered a strong possibility.

A significant rule change for this World Cup means that the second deciding factor in group standings, after points, is the head-to-head record between teams, rather than goal difference, which was used in previous tournaments. This rule applies when teams are level on points.

Tie-breaking criteria

If multiple teams are level on points, a mini-league is formed using only the results from the matches involving those tied teams. Within this mini-league, teams are ranked by points won, then by goal difference, and finally by goals scored. If teams remain level after these criteria, the overall group goal difference and goals scored are considered.

Further tie-breakers include the Team Conduct Score (TCS), which is a fair play score based on the number of cards accumulated. Teams begin with zero points, with deductions for cards: -1 for a yellow card, -3 for a red card resulting from two yellows, -4 for a straight red card, and -5 for a yellow followed by a straight red. A score closer to zero is better. If teams are still level, the higher Fifa ranking from June’s update would determine progression.

For the top eight third-place finishers, progression is first determined by the most points accumulated. If eight or more nations finish third with the same number of points, goal difference becomes the deciding factor. Generally, teams finishing third with four points or more are likely to advance, while teams on three points would require a strong goal difference to progress.

Match action

In the second half of the match, there have been limited opportunities in the penalty area, with Australia recording two touches and Paraguay none. The game resumed following a hydration break. During the match, Jackson Irvine of Australia received a yellow card for a foul. Paraguay made a substitution early in the second half, with Mauricio coming on for Alexandro Maidana. Later, Alex Arce was introduced for Gabriel Avalos.

Paraguay registered their first shot on target after 50 minutes, courtesy of Mauricio. Australia’s Nestory Irankunda had an opportunity on the right side, driving into the box before sending a cross out of play. Similarly, Paraguay’s Julio Enciso set up Caceres, whose cross also went out of play. Jackson Irvine delivered a low cross from the right, but no Australian player was in position to capitalise.

The match continues to be a tight affair, with both teams pushing for a breakthrough to secure their place in the next stage of the tournament.
