Bosnia-Herzegovina boost knockout stage hopes with 3-1 win over Qatar

Bosnia-Herzegovina secured a 3-1 victory against Qatar in their final Group B fixture, enhancing their prospects of advancing to the knockout stages of the World Cup for the first time. The win saw them finish level on points with Canada, who placed second in the group. Despite this, Bosnia-Herzegovina settled for third place due to their head-to-head record against the co-hosts. This means they did not achieve automatic qualification for the last 32 but could still progress as one of the best eight third-placed teams in the tournament.

The match, held in Seattle, saw temperatures reach 29C. Bosnia started with considerable intent, with Ermedin Demirovic and Ivan Sunjic testing Qatar goalkeeper Mahmud Abunada with shots from distance within the first three minutes. The deadlock was broken in the 29th minute when Kerim Alajbegovic, an 18-year-old, navigated past two Qatari defenders before unleashing a powerful right-footed strike past Abunada.

Bosnian supporters were visibly elated as their 40-year-old captain, Edin Dzeko, played a crucial role in the team’s second goal just six minutes later. Dzeko, who was making his 150th appearance for his country and holds the record for most goals and appearances for Bosnia, saw his volleyed effort deflect off defender Sultan Al Brake and into the net. Abunada was credited with an own goal. Dzeko nearly extended the lead to 3-0 four minutes later, but his low shot struck the post after he broke clear.

Key Moments and Qatar’s Response

Despite Bosnia’s dominance, Qatar created opportunities. Captain Hassan Al-Haydos gave them a lifeline by bundling in a cross from Edmilson Jr, reducing the deficit three minutes before half-time. The Asian champions concluded the first half strongly, with Pedro Miguel also hitting the post after being set up by Akram Afif. Afif himself brushed the side-netting early in the second half, as Qatar continued to pose a threat on counter-attacks, though they lacked a decisive finish despite bringing on prolific scorer Almoez Ali for the final 20 minutes.

Bosnia’s defence held firm, and they sealed their victory in the 80th minute. Substitute Ermin Mahmic scored for the second consecutive game, slotting the ball past Abunada after capitalising on a loose ball following a scramble in the Qatar box. This win marked only Bosnia’s second World Cup victory, with their first being a 3-1 triumph against Iran in their debut campaign in 2014.

The attendance at Lumen Field for the match was 66,925. The result means Bosnia-Herzegovina will now monitor other match outcomes to confirm their progression to the last 32. Their four-point tally is expected to be sufficient for a place in the next round. Meanwhile, Qatar finished at the bottom of Group B with one point.

Coaches’ Reactions and Future Prospects

Bosnia-Herzegovina head coach Sergej Barbarez expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, stating, “We came here as complete underdogs and we are trying to do something major. This was a perfect match.” He also highlighted the potential of his young squad, including goal scorers Alajbegovic and Mahmic, noting, “We have a lot of young players and I truly do believe that this national team has just begun and the next World Cup will be their true, own World Cup.”

On the other side, Qatar head coach Julen Lopetegui reflected on his team’s efforts, saying, “We did many, many things well but football does not pay us back today. We deserved more.” He added, “You don’t know when you will have other possibilities in your life to be in the World Cup. Let’s see, we hope it is not the last match.” The result for Bosnia-Herzegovina means they will keep a keen eye on developments elsewhere to ensure their last 32 spot is secured, where they could potentially face either Germany or the USA.
