Budimir secures win for Croatia against Panama on Modric’s landmark day

Croatia secures crucial points

Croatia achieved a 1-0 victory over Panama in their World Cup Group L match, securing vital points and eliminating Panama from the tournament. The match, held in Toronto, saw Ante Budimir score the decisive goal, coming on as a half-time substitute.

The win places Croatia a point behind England and Ghana in the group standings. For Panama, this result means they are eliminated and have yet to earn a point across five World Cup matches, spanning from the 2018 edition to the current one.

The game was a significant occasion for Croatia‘s midfielder Luka Modric, who made his 200th international appearance. Following the match, his teammates celebrated this milestone by throwing him in the air, with many wearing T-shirts emblazoned with “Infinite Legacy,” the number 200, and an image of Modric.

Modric now joins an exclusive group of male players, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, and Kuwait’s Bader al-Mutawa, as the only individuals to reach 200 senior appearances for their national teams. Despite the celebratory atmosphere, Croatia manager Zlatko Dalic noted Modric‘s humble nature regarding such acknowledgments.

Match dynamics and key moments

The first half of the match was characterised by a slow pace, with Panama adopting a defensive 5-4-1 formation. They invited Croatia deep into their half, focusing on counter-attacks. However, Panama lacked precision and manpower in their attacking efforts, often sending crosses towards an outnumbered José Fajardo.

Croatia also struggled to break through Panama‘s organised defence in the initial period, frequently resorting to crosses or attempting to find space for Ivan Perisic. The closest either side came to scoring in the first half was when Cristian Martínez‘s shot was saved by Dominik Livakovic, and a header from José Luis Rodríguez was deflected off the underside of the bar by Livakovic.

The deadlock was broken in the 54th minute. Following a double substitution at half-time by Zlatko Dalic, which saw Andre Kramaric and Ante Budimir enter the game, Josip Stanisic delivered a cross from a through ball by Marco Pasalic. Budimir, positioned at the far post, converted the opportunity to give Croatia the lead.

After conceding, Panama pushed forward, creating more open spaces. Marco Pasalic had an opportunity to extend Croatia‘s lead but was denied by goalkeeper Orlando Mosquera. Livakovic continued to perform reliably, making several saves from close-range attempts by Panama.

Panama‘s manager, Thomas Christiansen, expressed pride in his team’s dedication and spirit, despite the loss. He highlighted that Croatia scored from two shots on goal. The result means Panama will play for pride in their final group-stage match against England, while Croatia will face Ghana on Saturday.

Looking ahead for both teams

For Croatia, the victory has alleviated some pressure after their initial 4-2 defeat to England. The team now finds itself in a stronger position to advance to the last 32 of the World Cup. Their next fixture is against Ghana, who are level on four points with England.

Panama, despite their elimination, will continue to seek their first World Cup win in their upcoming match against Group L leaders England. The team has a history of notable performances in other international competitions, including reaching the knockout stages of the 2024 Copa América and the final of the 2025 Concacaf Nations League.

The match concluded with Modric being substituted after 81 minutes, receiving a strong ovation from the crowd, marking a memorable day in his extensive international career.
