Chelsea have reached an agreement with Aston Villa for the transfer of England midfielder Morgan Rogers in a deal valued at £117m. This move is set to establish a new club record for Chelsea and also marks a new transfer record for an English player. Rogers is scheduled to undergo a medical examination on Monday, following his return from international duty with England at the 2026 World Cup.
The £117m fee surpasses the previous record for an English player, which was £116m paid by Manchester City to Nottingham Forest for Elliot Anderson earlier this summer. For Chelsea, this acquisition exceeds the £107m spent on Enzo Fernandez in 2023, making Rogers their most expensive signing to date. Reports indicate Rogers is expected to sign a six-year contract, with an option for an additional year.
The transfer comes as new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso works to shape his squad ahead of the upcoming Premier League season. Rogers, who was previously part of Manchester City‘s system, joined Aston Villa from Middlesbrough in February 2024 for an initial £8m, potentially rising to £15m.
Impact of the Transfer
Due to a clause in his previous transfer, Middlesbrough is set to receive a significant sum from this deal. The Championship club will earn at least £20.4m from Rogers’ move to Chelsea, depending on triggered add-ons. This is considered an English record for a transfer sell-on fee, with Middlesbrough having made a total of £35.8m from his sale, including a profit of £34.7m after acquiring him for £1.1m in July 2023.
Rogers’ arrival at Stamford Bridge is seen as a significant statement of intent from Chelsea, especially after their 10th-placed finish in the Premier League last season, which means they will not be participating in European football. The club’s ability to secure a top target, who was also reportedly a primary target for Arsenal, suggests that Chelsea remains an attractive destination for leading talents in the Premier League.
The midfielder scored 21 goals in 85 league appearances for Aston Villa and was a key member of the squad that won the Europa League last season. He has also earned 22 senior England appearances, scoring once, and featured in seven games during the recent World Cup.

The move raises questions about how Rogers will integrate into the team and the potential impact on star attacker Cole Palmer. Rogers was one of three England players selected for Thomas Tuchel‘s World Cup squad at Palmer’s expense, highlighting similarities between the two players. Both are capable of playing in various attacking positions and will compete for minutes alongside other forwards like Estevao Willian, Pedro Neto, Jamie Gittens, and fellow summer signing Geovany Quenda.
Squad Changes at Villa Park
Rogers is the second Aston Villa midfielder to depart this week, following Youri Tielemans‘ £35m transfer to Manchester United. Despite these departures, Aston Villa has been active in the transfer market, bringing in Switzerland international Johan Manzambi from Freiburg in a deal worth over £50m. They have also reportedly lined up Wolves‘ Joao Gomes for £38m.
The transfer window has seen Chelsea move quickly to secure their targets. The club had identified Rogers as a potential signing many months ago, valuing his versatility and quality in the final third. Xabi Alonso reportedly played a significant role in convincing Rogers to join, promising him regular starts on the left wing, a position where Alejandro Garnacho has struggled and Jamie Gittens has faced injury issues.

Rogers largely played as a number 10 for Aston Villa but is aware that his close friend and England teammate, Cole Palmer, has made that position his own at Chelsea. This transfer underscores Chelsea‘s ambition and their willingness to invest in top talent as they aim to improve on their previous season’s performance.
The deal for Rogers is expected to be finalised early next week, pending a successful medical examination on Monday.
