American tennis star Coco Gauff experienced an unexpected incident on her way to her opening match at the French Open. Gauff revealed she was involved in a “mini car accident” shortly before her first-round victory against fellow American Taylor Townsend.
During her journey to the Roland Garros site, Gauff’s vehicle reportedly collided with a pole. She described the impact, noting that her juice spilled throughout the car. Despite the incident, Gauff confirmed that she was unharmed.
Journey to Roland Garros
Gauff recounted the details of the accident, explaining that police had instructed her driver to proceed, but a pole remained in the way, leading to the collision. The impact rendered the car undrivable, forcing Gauff to seek alternative transport.
She initially took a taxi and then a tournament car to reach the venue. Gauff viewed the eventful start to her day as a potential “good omen,” suggesting it helped her focus less on the upcoming match. She expressed relief at arriving “in one piece.”

The incident occurred on Tuesday, the same day Gauff secured a straight-sets victory over Townsend with a score of 6-4, 6-0. This win advanced her to the second round, where she is scheduled to face Mayar Sherif of Egypt on Thursday.
Other notable French Open events
The French Open has seen several dramatic moments in its early stages. In another first-round match, Daniil Medvedev was observed arguing with his wife, Daria, during his defeat to Adam Walton. After losing a game in the opening set, Medvedev expressed frustration, prompting his wife to call out from the stands, reminding him that the heat affected everyone and he needed to “behave.” Medvedev responded by stating he would “start to behave” once he began to find the court.
Medvedev ultimately lost his match in three sets, marking his seventh first-round exit at the French Open.
Meanwhile, Alexander Blockx withdrew from his match against Alex de Minaur due to an ankle injury. Blockx, who had a successful clay season reaching the semi-finals in Madrid and the last 16 in Monte Carlo, was seen limping after a practice session, leading to his withdrawal from the tournament and allowing de Minaur to advance directly to the third round.
Other significant upsets in the opening round included the elimination of Jessica Pegula, ranked fifth by the WTA, who was defeated by Kimberly Birrell despite winning the first set.
Upcoming second-round matches on Wednesday are set to feature prominent players such as Novak Djokovic, Joao Fonseca, Alexander Zverev, Iga Swiatek, Elena Rybakina, and British player Francesca Jones.
