France seeks revenge in semi-final clash

France and Spain are set to meet in a highly anticipated World Cup semi-final on Tuesday, a match that carries added significance for the French side. Midfielder Warren Zaïre-Emery has expressed his team’s desire for revenge following their exit in the Euro 2024 semi-final at the hands of Spain. Zaïre-Emery stated that the team is ready and focused on securing a victory against Spain.

The upcoming fixture marks another encounter between these two European football powerhouses. Spain emerged victorious in their Euro 2024 semi-final match in Munich. However, Zaïre-Emery believes that the current French squad is a different team, highlighting their revitalised form and strong attacking play that has led them to the last four of the World Cup.

Zaïre-Emery, who made his major tournament debut in France’s quarter-final win against Morocco, also addressed comments made by a former Spanish prime minister regarding the composition of the French team. He emphasised the unity and diverse backgrounds within the squad, stating that these elements contribute to what makes France strong.

Team preparations and tactical outlook

Didier Deschamps, the French head coach, may consider one change to the starting lineup that defeated Morocco. Aurélien Tchouaméni could be drafted in if the Real Madrid player is deemed fit after recovering from a muscle injury. Tchouaméni has missed France’s last two matches but Deschamps confirmed his availability for selection.

Concerns over Kylian Mbappé’s fitness were also addressed by Deschamps. Mbappé sustained an ankle knock against Morocco and did not complete Monday’s training session. However, Deschamps confirmed that Mbappé did train, albeit for a reduced duration, allaying fears about his participation in the semi-final.

Deschamps has consistently labelled Spain as the favourites for the tie, an assessment he reiterated, noting Spain’s strong performances since their initial match against Cape Verde. He anticipates a spectacular game between two offensively talented teams, while also acknowledging both sides’ defensive capabilities.

In contrast to Zaïre-Emery, Deschamps downplayed the notion of revenge, preferring to focus on the current match rather than past encounters. He noted that while previous matches, including a 5-4 loss in a Nations League semi-final last June, are part of history, the upcoming World Cup semi-final is a new battle of wills.

Spain’s strategy against France

Spain enters the semi-final as one of the four top-ranked teams remaining in the tournament, all of whom are former champions. This match represents Spain’s second appearance in the World Cup semi-finals. According to official rankings, it pits the first-ranked team against the third.

Spain’s tactical approach is characterised by their ability to control possession, a strategy that has seen them maintain an unmatched average possession share in the tournament. This patient build-up serves a dual purpose: it allows them to dominate the final third, completing over 1,000 passes in that area with high accuracy, and it contributes to their strong defensive record by limiting opposition opportunities.

The Spanish team aims to contain France’s potent attack, which is spearheaded by Kylian Mbappé and supported by players like Ousmane Dembele, Michael Olise, and Desire Doue. France is the tournament’s second-highest scorer, leading in shots on target and expected goals value. Mbappé is also tied for the leading scorer in the Golden Boot race.

Despite France’s formidable attacking statistics, Spain possesses a balanced blend of tactical and technical mastery. Key players such as Rodri and Lamine Yamal are central to their dynamic style, enabling quicker vertical transitions and creating one-on-one situations for their dangerous wingers. Rodri, in particular, is crucial in midfield, where Spain is expected to outnumber France’s two-man midfield, likely comprising Manu Kone and Adrien Rabiot.

Spain’s midfield, featuring Rodri and Pedri, along with support from Dani Olmo, excels in final-third passing. Rodri also plays a significant role in carrying the ball upfield to Lamine Yamal, who has recorded the most shot-ending carries among forwards. Spain’s counter-press and positional intelligence will be vital in dismantling France’s attack, with the match set to kick off at 8pm on Tuesday.
