Atlanta: England to make late call on Rice for World Cup semi-final

England will make a late assessment regarding the fitness of midfielder Declan Rice ahead of their World Cup semi-final match against Argentina on Wednesday. There is optimism that the Arsenal player will be able to overcome an illness to participate in the crucial fixture.

Rice was substituted at half-time during England’s quarter-final victory over Norway in Miami. Head coach Thomas Tuchel later confirmed that Rice had spent three days unwell before that match, which England won 2-1 after extra time. The midfielder’s condition has reportedly improved significantly over the past 48 hours, despite not having fully recovered from the sickness bug he contracted in Mexico, where England defeated the co-hosts 3-2 in the last 16.

There is increasing hope that Rice will be fit enough to start the semi-final in Atlanta. Given the importance of the occasion, it is anticipated that Rice will declare himself ready to play. However, due to the severity of his illness, England’s medical staff are expected to make a final decision on his availability closer to the match. Tuchel will monitor Rice’s recovery closely before making his selection.

Rice’s fitness concerns and team impact

In addition to the recent sickness bug, Rice has also been managing a neural issue affecting his lower back and hamstring for several months. The midfielder, who has 78 caps for England, has been a consistent presence in the team, starting all but one of England’s World Cup games so far. His absence from the 2-0 group-stage win against Panama was also due to an injury flare-up.

Rice’s potential return is significant for England, especially as he is expected to partner Elliot Anderson in midfield against the reigning world champions. His ability to overcome the illness and retain his place in the starting lineup would be a boost for the team.

England also faces other fitness concerns within the squad. Defender Ezri Konsa, who plays for Aston Villa, was substituted against Norway due to cramp. However, Konsa is anticipated to be available to start at right-back once again. There is also a possibility that Chelsea captain Reece James could be recalled to the starting lineup after making an appearance as a second-half substitute against Norway. Furthermore, Bukayo Saka, who impressed coming off the bench, could also be considered for a starting role.

Anticipation for the semi-final clash

The semi-final in Atlanta marks the first time England will face Argentina in a World Cup match since 2002, a fixture steeped in historical rivalry. Jordan Pickford, England’s goalkeeper, has emphasised the importance of maintaining composure during the match. He stated that the team understands the need to stay focused and not be distracted by the intense rivalry between the two nations.

Pickford highlighted England’s mentality throughout the tournament, noting their desire to win titles without engaging in scuffles. He stressed that the team remains respectful within the game, focusing on their performance regardless of referee decisions. This approach, he believes, will allow their football to speak for itself.

When asked about facing Lionel Messi, Pickford acknowledged the Argentine star’s quality but also pointed out that England cannot solely focus on him, given the strength of the entire Argentina team. He recognised the significance of the game, with thousands of supporters from both countries expected in Atlanta, where many seats are unsegregated. Pickford believes it is crucial for England not to get overwhelmed by the occasion.

The goalkeeper, who was part of the England squad that reached the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup and the finals of the European Championship in 2021 and 2024, expressed that reaching the final is a dream. He reiterated that the immediate focus is on Wednesday’s match against a very talented Argentina side. The challenge, he said, is for England to perform at their best to secure a place in the World Cup final.

Fifa has confirmed that Ismail Elfath will be the referee for the game in Atlanta. The American official, who referees in MLS, previously oversaw Norway’s victory over Brazil in the last 16.
