Davey Todd, a nine-time North West 200 winner, has been ruled out of this year’s race due to injuries sustained in a crash at the Daytona 200. The motorcycle racing community had high hopes for his return after his accident earlier this year.
In March, Todd suffered multiple injuries including a broken femur and tibia, as well as damage to his foot and nose. These injuries resulted from a mechanical failure during the Daytona 200, which threw him from his Triumph motorcycle and caused him to hit a wall. He underwent surgery in the USA shortly after the incident.
Despite completing an intensive six-week recovery program at the Formula Medicine clinic in Italy, where he worked hard to regain strength and mobility, Todd faced disappointment. He expressed that he felt strong and healthy during tests but was ultimately deemed unfit to race by the Chief Medical Officer.
Key facts about Todd’s recovery:
- Todd spent six weeks at Formula Medicine focusing on rehabilitation.
- He returned to riding for the first time at the Ricardo Tormo circuit in Valencia.
- His teammate Peter Hickman had initially indicated optimism about his recovery.
Reflecting on his situation, Todd said, “I’m gutted, I’m confused. I worked so hard over the last weeks to get fit and to come back and race in front of the fans here at the North West.” His sentiments resonate deeply within the local community that has celebrated his multiple victories over the years.
Mervyn Whyte, the event director for the North West 200, also shared in the disappointment: “We are very disappointed that Davey will not be on the grid this year.” This sentiment highlights how integral Todd has been to this prestigious event.
As he prepares for further recovery and rehabilitation, Todd’s absence leaves a significant gap in this year’s North West 200. His remarkable record of nine wins—including a treble in 2025—has made him a beloved figure among fans and fellow racers alike.
