England World Cup Squad: Foden, Palmer, and Maguire Reportedly to Miss Out

England Squad Decisions Loom

Thomas Tuchel is set to announce his 26-man England squad for this summer’s World Cup on Friday, with several prominent players reportedly missing out. Among those expected to be omitted are Manchester City’s Phil Foden, Chelsea’s Cole Palmer, and Manchester United defender Harry Maguire. The tournament will take place across the US, Mexico, and Canada, beginning on June 11.

Harry Maguire, 33, expressed his disappointment on Instagram, stating he was “shocked and gutted” by the decision, believing he could have played a significant role. His mother also voiced her displeasure on social media. Maguire has played 67 times for England, scoring seven goals, and had previously stated his desperation to participate in what he believed would be his last World Cup.

Foden and Palmer, both attacking midfielders, have reportedly had inconsistent seasons for their respective clubs. Foden made 32 top-flight appearances for Manchester City, starting 22 Premier League games, scoring seven goals and providing five assists. Palmer, who has had an injury-hit campaign for Chelsea, scored nine goals in 25 Premier League games.

Key Inclusions and Other Omissions

Despite these notable exclusions, Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins is expected to be included, following his team’s Europa League victory. Al-Ahli striker Ivan Toney, who has scored 32 goals in 32 games in the Saudi Arabian league, is also set to be part of the squad. This inclusion of Toney is considered by some to be a wildcard selection, with former England defender Phil Jagielka noting Toney’s potential as a penalty specialist.

Other players expected to miss out include Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White, despite being among the top-scoring English players in the Premier League with 14 goals. Manchester United’s Luke Shaw is also reportedly set to be omitted, despite a season where he started every league match for his club. Chelsea defender Levi Colwill and AC Milan defender Fikayo Tomori are understood to be out due to injury concerns, with Colwill having returned from an anterior cruciate ligament rupture in May.

Manchester City defender John Stones is very likely to be included, despite an injury-disrupted campaign, as Tuchel reportedly views him as a key player. Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton is another poised to miss out, while Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo is expected to retain his place in the squad. Brentford midfielder Jordan Henderson, a mainstay under Tuchel, is also anticipated to keep his spot.

Squad Composition and Managerial Approach

Tuchel’s selection approach appears to prioritize consistency, with a focus on form and chemistry rather than solely on reputation, according to analysis from Phil Jagielka. The manager has reportedly made difficult phone calls to inform players of their exclusion. The Football Association plans a digital-first announcement, streaming a live show from Wembley on its England app on Friday morning, featuring appearances from former England internationals.

The goalkeeping positions are expected to be straightforward, with Jordan Pickford as the undisputed No 1, supported by Dean Henderson and James Trafford. In defense, the omissions of Maguire, Tomori, and Colwill open up opportunities for players like Newcastle’s Dan Burn and Manchester City’s Nico O’Reilly. Concerns remain over the fitness of John Stones and Reece James, both of whom have had recent injury issues.

In midfield, Declan Rice is a certainty, with Elliot Anderson expected to partner him. Jordan Henderson’s experience and leadership are valued. Kobbie Mainoo, 21, is seen as a compelling option despite defensive weaknesses. Forwards Jude Bellingham, Eberechi Eze, and Morgan Rogers are thought to have secured their places, leading to disappointment for players like Cole Palmer and Phil Foden, who have had underwhelming club seasons for England.

England will play warm-up friendlies against New Zealand and Costa Rica before starting their World Cup campaign against Croatia on June 17, followed by group games against Ghana and Panama.
