Goodwood abandoned after sudden rainstorm

The final two races at Goodwood were abruptly abandoned after just 20 minutes of rain, leaving fans furious over the sudden decision. The races in question were the 16:30 Fitzdares Offers Bespoke Bets Handicap and the 17:05 Fitzdares Telephone and Text Betting Service Handicap.

Before the rain hit, everything seemed fine. Clerk of the course Ed Arkell noted, “Everybody’s been happy with the ground over the last two days. It’s been nice, quick ground, and we’ve had a very heavy shower on it, and it’s not had a chance to get in.” However, once the downpour began, conditions changed rapidly.

After the heavy shower, three horses slipped on the pull-up area, prompting officials to deem it unsafe. Racing TV commentators quickly confirmed what many feared: “I’m afraid it’s what we thought. It’s abandoned at Goodwood because of the pull-up area being deemed unsafe.” This marked a disappointing end to a day that had started with six completed races.

Fans expressed their anger online, stating that it was frustrating for such a quick decision to be made after only 20 minutes of rain. Many had traveled far to witness what is traditionally a highlight of summer—Glorious Goodwood.

Despite the cancellation of racing activities, Goodwood racecourse announced that all bars would remain open for attendees. This decision likely aimed to ease some frustration among those who came out for an exciting day at the races.

This incident marks the second disruption for Goodwood in eight months; previously, a serious car crash near the track caused delays. Observers hope that improvements will be made to avoid similar situations in future events.
