Irish Grand National: Soldier In Milan Triumphs at Fairyhouse

In a thrilling display of stamina and skill, Soldier In Milan won the Irish Grand National at Fairyhouse on Easter Monday, finishing an impressive 16 lengths ahead of the competition. The race, which spanned a challenging distance of three miles and five furlongs, featured 30 horses vying for the prestigious title.

Trained by Emmet Mullins, this victory marks a significant milestone, as it is Mullins’ first win in the Irish Grand National. Donagh Meyler rode Soldier In Milan to glory, expressing his relief and joy after a season filled with ups and downs. “I had a lot of ups and downs this season with horses not winning, getting beaten on horses and in stewards rooms but this makes up for it all,” Meyler shared.

Soldier In Milan, who was the pre-race favourite with odds of 6-1, showcased his readiness and determination throughout the race. Mullins noted, “He was fit and well. Funnily enough, I know he went off favourite, but I told Paul ‘everything is good, he’s happy, he’s healthy, he’s fit but I’ve seen him in better order.'” Despite Mullins’ modesty, the horse’s performance spoke volumes.

The competition was fierce, with Showurappreciation finishing in second place and The Enabler taking third. Argento Boy and Monbeg Genius rounded out the top five, with Monbeg Genius initially leading the race before finishing fifth.

As the community celebrated this remarkable victory, Mullins reflected on the significance of a well-backed favourite winning the Irish National, stating, “A well-backed favourite winning an Irish National is something special and he was greatly received here today. It’s an honour and a privilege.” This win not only brings pride to Mullins and Meyler but also to the local community that supports them.

Looking ahead, Soldier In Milan may compete in the Aintree Grand National next year, a path that has proven successful for many in the past. As the excitement continues to build, horse racing enthusiasts eagerly await further developments regarding his next steps.

The Irish Grand National is renowned for its drama, stamina, and unpredictability, and this year’s event certainly lived up to that reputation. With the victory of Soldier In Milan, the legacy of this beloved race continues to thrive, bringing together fans and participants alike in celebration of equestrian excellence.
