What Happened
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has announced a recall of Kendamil brand infant formula sold online and at Costco. The recall affects one-kilogram containers labeled “with whole milk” due to potential contamination with cereulide toxin, which can cause food poisoning.
Why It Matters
Cereulide is a toxin produced by certain strains of Bacillus cereus and is known for its heat stability, meaning it can survive cooking temperatures that typically kill bacteria. Symptoms of cereulide ingestion can begin rapidly, often resulting in nausea and vomiting. The CFIA has advised consumers not to consume, use, sell, serve, or distribute the affected products, although no illnesses have been reported in connection with this recall.
What’s Next
Kendal Nutricare, the manufacturer, indicated that the recall was prompted by a supply disruption that led to the use of a different oil source in two batches of the formula. The affected batches were produced in May 2025, with lot numbers 897274 and 888632. Consumers are urged to check their products and follow the CFIA’s guidance regarding the recall.
