For the second consecutive night, the Lakers dominated another opponent from the Pacific Division. LA jumped to a substantial lead in the opening quarter, managed to fend off a brief rally in the third, and ultimately secured a 128-104 victory against the Kings.
Similar to Saturday’s victory against Golden State, the Lakers initially fell behind but quickly regained the lead and maintained it without looking back. After establishing a double-digit advantage shortly after the first half began, the score never fell below ten points again.
Lakers Dominate Pacific Rivalry
The Lakers achieved a shooting percentage of 50% from the floor and 46.2% from beyond the arc, while providing assists on 34 out of their 47 successful field goals.
The matchup began with DeMar DeRozan, known for his midrange skills, sinking a jumper. Unfortunately, those were the only points the Kings could achieve, as the Lakers surged ahead, scoring 10 consecutive points. Austin Reaves linked up with LeBron James for a thrilling alley-oop, which was set up by outstanding defense from Marcus Smart.
Nique Clifford and Russell Westbrook made layups to halt the momentum for Sacramento. Clifford was the top scorer for the Kings with six points. All of the starting five for LA contributed to the score, with the exception of Smart.
Strong Start Sets Tone
Luka Dončić hit his first three-pointer of the evening, which boosted the Lakers’ advantage to 14 points with 3:05 remaining in the opening quarter. Shortly after, he sank another. LA concluded the period with a 13-4 scoring surge, establishing an 18-point lead.
Luke Kennard kicked off the second quarter with a three-point shot. Malik Monk quickly added four points in succession for the Kings. Sacramento intensified its defense, leading to careless mistakes from Los Angeles.
Smart and Luka both hit three-pointers to bring back the momentum. Maxi Kleber also joined the scoring spree with a powerful dunk assisted by Luka, which sent the Los Angeles bench into a frenzy.
Shooting Efficiency Shines
Things heated up when Monk received a technical foul following an altercation with Kleber. Deandre Ayton went an impressive 5-5 from the field, scoring 10 points. Ayton, Reaves, and Luka all reached double digits for the Lakers.
The Lakers extended their advantage to as high as 22 points, but with Westbrook contributing 12 points and LA’s shooting dropping to 40% in that quarter, the Kings managed to reduce the gap to 15 by the time halftime arrived.
The second half commenced with Clifford making a three-pointer. Ayton countered with a hook shot on the opposite end. Sacramento began the quarter with impressive momentum, hitting 66% of their shots. Clifford and Westbrook together accounted for seven of the nine points scored by the Kings.
Key Players Impact the Game
With 9:06 remaining, the Lakers were holding onto a 10-point advantage over the Kings.
Reaves linked up with LeBron for a crucial dunk that halted some of Sacramento’s momentum. This ignited a 10-2 scoring surge, with Luka contributing five points in a row, pushing the Lakers’ advantage to 19.
Luka truly resumed his cooking with two three-pointers, one of which was made after he stumbled and almost lost control of the ball.
Clifford continued to prepare meals for the Kings, and he led the scoring with 22 points. By the conclusion of the third quarter, the Lakers held a 20-point advantage.
The Kings committed a turnover to start the fourth quarter, which resulted in LeBron getting fouled and successfully making two free throws. Smart hit his third three-pointer of the match.
Kleber enhanced his impressive performance off the bench with yet another powerful dunk. Following a pair of 3-pointers from LeBron, he was substituted, allowing Los Angeles’ bench to secure another dominant win, which featured a spectacular dunk from Adou Thiero.
Essential Player Metrics
Luka concluded the game with 28 points, five rebounds, and nine assists. Reaves contributed 12 points along with five assists and two blocks. LeBron recorded 24 points, adding five assists and two steals. Ayton finished with 12 points, shooting a perfect 6-6.
Kennard scored 11 points, hitting 60% of his three-point attempts. In his return from an illness, Rui Hachimura contributed with eight points and two rebounds.
Smart recorded nine points along with three rebounds and five steals, while Kleber finished with six points and six rebounds.
The upcoming game for the Lakers is scheduled against the New Orleans Pelicans on Tuesday at 7:30 PM PT.
