LeBron James has confirmed his move to the Philadelphia 76ers, signing a two-year, $8m deal that includes a player option. The announcement, made by James on social media on Friday morning, follows his departure from the Los Angeles Lakers after eight seasons. Klutch Sports Group CEO Rich Paul confirmed the terms of the agreement.
James, 41, stated that he strongly considered retirement before deciding to join the 76ers for what will be his 24th season in the NBA. He expressed his excitement to energize a new fanbase and embark on this journey one last time, believing he can help make the 76ers a championship team. He noted that this decision was not driven by money or family, but by his desire to compete and pursue another championship.
This move pairs the NBA’s all-time leading scorer with key players such as Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe, and the recently acquired Jaylen Brown. Philadelphia aims to bolster its roster in pursuit of its first NBA championship since 1983. James’s arrival comes after a period of speculation regarding his next destination, with Golden State, Cleveland, and Miami all mentioned as potential landing spots.
James’s Decision and Future Role
James’s decision was reportedly based on his belief that the 76ers offered the best opportunity to win a fifth championship. The acquisition of Jaylen Brown, a five-time All-Star and the 2024 Finals MVP, earlier this month via trade, made Philadelphia an even more attractive destination. James will now join Brown, former NBA MVP Embiid, All-Star Maxey, rising second-year guard Edgecombe, and championship coach Nick Nurse.
The deal provides James with the flexibility to become a free agent again after one season, while also limiting the 76ers’ long-term financial commitment. Last season, James earned nearly $53m with the Lakers. He averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 7.2 assists for the Lakers, maintaining his streak of averaging at least 20 points per game across all 23 seasons of his career.
James, who will turn 42 in December, informed the Lakers earlier this summer of his intent not to return, concluding an eight-year tenure that included the 2020 NBA championship. His agent, Rich Paul, had previously indicated that James was evaluating teams that offered the best chance to compete for another title at this stage of his career.
Maxey and Embiid reportedly pursued James diligently over recent weeks, with both players making multiple phone calls to influence his decision. James had also given serious consideration to playing with the 76ers in 2018 before ultimately choosing Los Angeles.
Philadelphia’s Roster Strengthening
The 76ers finished last season with a 45-37 record and were swept in the second round of the playoffs by the eventual champions, the New York Knicks. Their active offseason has included the significant trade for Brown from the Boston Celtics, in exchange for Paul George and four future draft picks—two first-round and two second-round.
This trade was a crucial factor in Philadelphia’s pursuit of James. Before acquiring Brown, the 76ers internally considered themselves longshots for James. However, the addition of Brown transformed their roster, making them a more compelling option for the veteran superstar.
With James joining the team, he is expected to play as a power forward, starting opposite Brown. His playmaking abilities will be vital for the 76ers, especially with Maxey capable of playing off the ball. This setup allows James to integrate without having to shoulder the primary offensive responsibility, blending with the talents of Maxey, Brown, and Embiid.
The 76ers now possess what is considered, on paper, their strongest team and best chance to win a title since 2001, when Allen Iverson had his MVP season. The signing will become official once it is completed under NBA rules.
