Liverpool appoints Andoni Iraola as new head coach on two-year deal

Iraola takes the helm at Anfield

Liverpool has officially appointed Andoni Iraola as its new head coach, with the 43-year-old signing a two-year deal at Anfield. He succeeds Arne Slot, who was dismissed just one year after leading the club to a Premier League title. This appointment follows Slot’s departure on May 30.

Iraola joins Liverpool after three seasons managing AFC Bournemouth in the Premier League. Sporting director Richard Hughes, who previously appointed Iraola at Bournemouth in 2023, led the selection process for the new head coach. While other candidates were considered, Iraola was reportedly the only one with whom Liverpool engaged in direct discussions.

The club expressed confidence in Iraola’s capabilities, noting the widespread interest in him this summer. They were also impressed by his strong desire to join Liverpool. The club believes Iraola is the ideal manager to instill a more aggressive and proactive style of play.

A new era for Liverpool’s playing style

Iraola’s tenure at Bournemouth saw the team achieve an 18-game unbeaten run during the latter half of the 2025-26 Premier League season. This impressive performance led to a sixth-place finish and qualification for Europa League football, with Bournemouth ending the season just three points behind Liverpool in the league table.

In his first interview as Liverpool’s head coach, Iraola acknowledged the significant responsibility and high expectations associated with delivering success at Anfield. He expressed his excitement about joining what he described as a “massive club” and a “special club.”

Iraola’s coaching philosophy, which emphasizes intensity, aggressiveness, and organization, is expected to align well with Liverpool’s historical identity. His 4-2-3-1 formation, frequently used at Bournemouth, is seen as a suitable fit for some of Liverpool’s tactical approaches over the past year. The attacking nature of his full-backs is also expected to benefit players like Milos Kerkez, who had a challenging start at Liverpool but showed recovery towards the end of the season and previously thrived under Iraola at Bournemouth.

The intensity of Iraola’s pressing game at Bournemouth was notable, with the team generating a high number of shots after winning possession in the final third. This approach suggests a potential return to a style reminiscent of Jürgen Klopp’s gegenpressing, offering a contrast to the more restrained approach seen under Slot.

Former player Jamie Redknapp has praised Iraola’s ability to handle pressure and his high-energy, high-pressing style of football, which he believes will appeal to Liverpool fans. Redknapp highlighted Iraola’s success in transforming players at Bournemouth from average to top performers.

Challenges and opportunities ahead

Despite the optimism, some observers, including Jamie Carragher, have raised questions about whether Iraola can maintain his high-intensity style over a full season with Liverpool’s demanding schedule, which includes playing every three days. Carragher noted that Bournemouth typically played once a week, a significant difference from the workload at a top club like Liverpool.

Iraola, however, views the upcoming period as an opportunity. With many senior players participating in the World Cup and arriving later for pre-season, he anticipates a chance to work closely with younger players and those returning from loans. This will allow him to integrate his identity with them and gather valuable information before making key decisions for the season.

He plans to use the month before officially starting work with the players to gather information and understand the club thoroughly. Iraola expressed his ambition to fight for and win titles at Liverpool, acknowledging the high expectations that come with the role.

He emphasized his desire to become an integral part of the Liverpool community, stating, “I want to earn the right to be one of you, so we can enjoy it all together.” Iraola‘s contract with Liverpool is for two years.
