Met gala 2026 theme: Costume Art to Redefine Fashion’s Role

The 2026 Met Gala, set for May 4 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, will embrace a theme called ‘Costume Art.’ This theme emphasizes the significance of the dressed body throughout art history, showcasing how fashion intertwines with artistic expression.

Traditionally, the Met Gala has offered a subtitle to its themes, but this year marks a shift. Andrew Bolton, curator of the Costume Institute, has chosen to present the theme without a subtitle for the first time. He explains that “what connects every curatorial department and what connects every single gallery in the museum is fashion, or the dressed body.” This connection highlights a broader understanding of how clothing impacts artistic narratives.

For attendees, the dress code will be ‘Fashion Is Art,’ inviting guests to interpret this notion creatively on the red carpet. The exhibition accompanying this year’s gala will feature nearly 12,000 square feet of space within the Condé M. Nast Galleries and will include an impressive array of artworks.

Key features of the exhibition include:

  • Garments and artworks spanning 5,000 years of art history.
  • A hand-painted carpet designed to resemble a stone garden pathway.
  • A color palette featuring tan with patches of moss green, framed by wisteria lining the tent’s ceiling and walls.

The anticipation surrounding this year’s event is palpable. Philip, an avid follower of fashion events, remarked on social media, “The thought of even being able to exist at an event like this… nobody even went there.” This sentiment reflects a growing excitement about how fashion can transform perceptions of art.

As Bolton noted about this year’s approach: “We took it out and it was like taking off a corset.” The freedom from traditional constraints may inspire attendees to push boundaries in their interpretations of both fashion and art.
