Michelle pfeiffer: A Journey into the Heart of The Madison

Michelle Pfeiffer was completely unaware of the adventure that awaited her. She had no inkling that she would encounter rustic cabins, muddy riverbanks, swarms of insects, and Kurt Russell in her path. All she was aware of was that Taylor Sheridan, the creator of Yellowstone, wished to discuss something with her. Michelle Pfeiffer stars as Stacy Clyburn in The Madison.

Typically, a producer provides a script to initiate discussions about a new series. However, Sheridan takes a different approach. “There wasn’t anything written down. So he invited me to Texas, saying, ‘I’ll share the story with you,’” Pfeiffer shares with Town & Country in this exclusive first interview regarding her forthcoming series, The Madison, a Taylor Sheridan prestige drama.

Unexpected Adventure Awaits

Everything felt strange to Michelle Pfeiffer, yet she was lucky to have a friend to reach out to for guidance. Someone who had collaborated with Sheridan on the Yellowstone prequel 1923. “I reached out to Helen Mirren and said, ‘What’s going on with this?’ She replied, ‘No, it’s fantastic. Go for it!’” She enjoys tequila with someone she loves.

That’s how Michelle Pfeiffer, an Oscar nominee known for her role in The Fabulous Baker Boys and Dangerous Liaisons, found herself at Sheridan’s sprawling 600-acre Bosque Ranch near Weatherford, Texas—even though she considers herself more of a city dweller. “I am definitely a city mouse,” Pfeiffer admits. “So I was quite astonished by the intense feelings I experienced and how deeply it affected me.”

Collaboration with Taylor Sheridan

Along with sharing the narrative of The Madison, Sheridan had a hidden agenda. “To be honest, he was trying to gauge me. It felt like a significant risk. He shared the main storyline and the essence of this character. However, at that moment, it hadn’t been fully developed.” The Madison is a Taylor Sheridan prestige drama.

The overarching themes of the series, set to premiere on March 14, 2026, on Paramount+, are currently the only details available to fans. Initially, Sheridan envisioned The Madison as linked to Yellowstone, but as the writing progressed, it transformed into an independent narrative. One of the influences behind it is the 1992 film A River Runs Through It, directed by Robert Redford, which tells the story of a family whose struggles are eased by a tranquil river.

Role of Stacy Clyburn

Michelle Pfeiffer portrays Stacy Clyburn, the matriarch of an affluent family in New York City, who faces emotional turmoil in the stunning yet remote Madison River valley of Montana. A death occurs (the specifics of whose life is lost are meant to be kept secret, and Sheridan views it as a spoiler), but it’s clear that the Clyburn family is ill-equipped to handle the tragedy.

Stacy, portrayed by Michelle Pfeiffer, is married to Preston (played by Russell), who owns a charming retreat by the river in Montana. She invites everyone to this serene location to confront an unimaginable situation. “She truly serves as the foundation of her family, striving to be their moral guide when disaster strikes,” Pfeiffer explains. “They are a New York socialite family moving through elite circles, and facing hardship is not something they are accustomed to.”

In that sense, it’s fortunate that the actress didn’t quite fit in with the other cowboys on Sheridan’s Texas ranch. A touch of distance from nature might have been precisely what he sought in a leading lady for The Madison, where Michelle Pfeiffer plays Stacy Clyburn.

Behind the Scenes of The Madison

However, the mastermind behind Landman, Lioness, 1883, Mayor of Kingstown, and Tulsa King was also curious to see if she could blend into his successful TV production environment. “I might not recall this perfectly—it was some time ago and I had a few drinks—but he had this large space in his home where people would gather after work, especially after filming since many of his shows are shot nearby,” Pfeiffer recounts. “He mentioned that he views it as being part of a family.” After her children left, Pfeiffer faced challenges with the empty-nest syndrome.

Tequila. That’s quite a twist. Initially, when they were brainstorming about The Madison and the liquor, Sheridan hadn’t pinpointed a particular actor for the role of her character’s influential husband. However, the actor he eventually chose had previously been in a romantic relationship with Michelle Pfeiffer in the 1988 film Tequila Sunrise.

“That was quite some time ago, and I truly enjoyed collaborating with Michelle,” Russell shares with Town & Country. “When this chance arose, I was immediately drawn to the script, and I believed Michelle would absolutely excel in her role. And trust me, she does. Michelle was a significant factor in my decision to take part in this project.” Michelle Pfeiffer stars as Stacy Clyburn in The Madison.

They had only collaborated on that single film, featuring Russell as a DEA agent, Mel Gibson as a drug dealer, and Pfeiffer as the object of their affection. When Tequila Sunrise is mentioned in discussions with Pfeiffer, it’s evident that the Robert Towne-directed movie isn’t among her top picks. She recalls it being a difficult experience, though Russell stood out as a positive influence. “Kurt and I worked on—[what was] for me—a challenging production,” she diplomatically shares. “I faced difficulties, and he was a true confidant. He was always present, acting as the cheerleader. You know how Kurt is.” After her children left home, Pfeiffer also faced her own challenges with the empty-nest syndrome.

Considering the challenges faced by the Clyburns in The Madison, Michelle Pfeiffer believed that their experiences from that tough film provided a solid foundation for the long-term couple they would portray this time. “Such experiences with individuals, similar to what this family is going through, create strong connections,” she explains. “It’s akin to the scar tissue that forms.” Pfeiffer once posed inside a private plane with Kate Hudson.

Even with their vast fortune, Russell’s character travels to this distant location alongside his brother, Paul (Matthew Fox), to remain connected to something genuine. Similar to how Russell grounded himself with his home in Colorado, this untouched landscape represents the indulgence the fictional siblings embraced after achieving early success. “This little slice of paradise … it holds immense significance for them,” Russell explains. “He ventures out there to share those moments with his brother whenever possible. It’s truly where his heart lies.” Kurt Russell plays Preston Clyburn in The Madison.

Stacy, portrayed by Michelle Pfeiffer in The Madison, represents another piece of his heart, despite her aversion to hunting elk and fly-fishing. The women of the Clyburn family typically avoid the Madison River, only coming together in times of crisis, far removed from their affluent urban lifestyle. “They ultimately choose to stay and attempt to make it work. That’s where the theme of feeling out of place or the narrative emerges,” Pfeiffer explains.

At the heart of The Madison lies a tale of heartbreak, yet it is also infused with unexpected humor. The classic scenario of urban dwellers facing the wilderness unfolds. “I’m always taken aback by how much laughter emerges during family tragedies,” Pfeiffer remarks. “It seems to be the body’s instinct to find relief when situations become overwhelmingly intense. In moments of survival, people often reveal their most unflattering traits. Strangely, witnessing each other’s flaws can actually deepen connections and enhance love.” Michelle Pfeiffer stars as Stacy Clyburn in The Madison.

Some of the humor evokes another classic featuring Russell, who is joined by his real-life partner Goldie Hawn as a wealthy woman who endures a rugged lifestyle alongside a working-class man. “It’s amusing that you think of Overboard,” Russell chuckles. “What I thought was: this is kind of the serious take on Green Acres. He doesn’t declare, ‘You are my wife, farewell to city life!’ He’s not that type. Instead, he expresses, ‘I don’t want to make you feel guilty, but I would really like for you to experience this.’ So he never pressures her.” She finds joy in Zoom calls with her granddaughter.

When heartbreak strikes, it leads her to seek solace in the embrace of Mother Nature. Russell expressed admiration for the immense challenge that Michelle Pfeiffer faces in The Madison. “Everyone in the cast is outstanding, but she truly shines,” he remarks. “This is a demanding role, and she has taken it on with determination—and she maintains her grip.” Michelle Pfeiffer stars as Stacy Clyburn in The Madison.
