Milton keynes railway emergency

An emergency incident at Milton Keynes railway station on May 2, 2026, caused significant delays during rush hour. This disruption highlights ongoing frustrations over the lack of passenger services on the newly constructed East West Rail line.

The emergency situation arose when all lines at the station were blocked due to an incident near the railway. Emergency services quickly responded, leading to numerous delays and cancellations that affected many commuters trying to reach their destinations.

Local residents have expressed their dissatisfaction with the current state of train services. Callum Anderson voiced a common sentiment: “People can see it and hear it but they can’t use it.” This frustration is particularly pronounced in areas like Winslow, where around 4,500 residents have been waiting for reliable transport links.

Despite freight trains operating at the new Winslow station since late 2024, passenger services have yet to commence. The East West Rail project, which aims to connect Oxford and Cambridge via Milton Keynes, has faced numerous delays. Initially scheduled to begin in March 2025, these services have been postponed multiple times with no definitive opening date provided.

Diana Blamires, a local resident, expressed her anger: “There’s fury. People came to places like Winslow thinking they’d be able to get a train to a job in London, or Milton Keynes or Oxford.” Such sentiments reflect a growing impatience among communities reliant on these transport links.

The delays stem from a dispute regarding whether two-carriage trains require guards—a point that has created significant obstacles. According to Olly Glover, a local MP, “Ultimately the government and the DfT are the ones who made the decision late; they have not resolved this impasse and they have no plan to do so.” Meanwhile, Chiltern Railways is working on necessary modifications and staffing arrangements for service introduction.

The RMT union contends that the ongoing delays are due to indecision and unresolved planning issues rather than their disputes. They stated, “It is simply inaccurate to blame delays to East West Rail on our dispute when the project has been held back for years by indecision, rising costs and unresolved planning issues.” The project is seen as vital for economic growth in the Oxford-Cambridge corridor.
