Mircea Lucescu Hospitalized in Bucharest

“This morning the patient suffered an acute heart attack,” a hospital representative confirmed, shedding light on the serious health situation of Mircea Lucescu, the esteemed 80-year-old coach.

Lucescu has been transferred to intensive care due to a heart rhythm disorder, following an increase in irregularities that did not respond to treatment. His hospitalization on March 29 came after he fell ill during the Romania national team camp, just days after a disappointing 1-0 loss to Türkiye in the semifinal of the 2026 FIFA World Cup European qualifiers play-offs.

His tenure with the Romania national team began in the summer of 2024, and under his management, the team recorded 11 wins, 1 draw, and 6 losses across 18 official matches. However, the recent defeat against Türkiye marked a significant moment, leading to his official resignation as head coach on April 2.

Despite stepping down, the Romanian Football Federation is reportedly considering continuing their cooperation with Lucescu in another role, reflecting his longstanding influence in Romanian football.

As of now, Lucescu’s condition is stable, and he is being carefully monitored by specialists. His contributions to football, particularly his successful stints with Shakhtar Donetsk and Dynamo Kyiv, have left an indelible mark on the sport.

The football community is rallying around Lucescu, sending well wishes and support during this challenging time. Fans and players alike are hopeful for his recovery and future contributions to the game.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding the next steps for Lucescu’s health and potential roles within the Romanian Football Federation.
