Morgan Rogers joins Chelsea in record deal, cites Xabi Alonso and family influence

Rogers’ move to Chelsea and connection with Xabi Alonso

Morgan Rogers has completed his move to Chelsea from Aston Villa, signing a seven-year deal. The transfer fee for the England international was £117m, making him the Blues’ record signing. The agreement for the 23-year-old was reached on Saturday, with Chelsea securing his signature ahead of Arsenal, who had also been in discussions to sign him.

A significant factor in Rogers’ decision to join the west London club was the opportunity to work under new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso. Rogers expressed excitement about the project with the new manager and the direction the club is heading. He stated that Chelsea is the biggest club in London and a team he has admired since childhood.

Rogers, who recently helped England achieve a third-place finish at the World Cup, started in the 2-1 semi-final defeat to Argentina and the 6-4 win over France that secured the bronze medal. His playing style aligns with Alonso’s vision, which was a key draw. Rogers is also looking forward to playing alongside his friend Cole Palmer, with whom he has discussed this possibility for years.

Family and personal growth

Rogers’ family has played a crucial role in his journey, providing support and a platform for him to pursue football. He credits them for helping him reach this point in his career, noting their presence at the training ground during his move to Chelsea. His family encouraged him to be free and happy in his decisions, believing this would allow him to be his best self.

Reflecting on his career, Rogers discussed overcoming challenges, including difficult loan spells at Lincoln, Bournemouth, and Blackpool from Manchester City. These experiences, he explained, taught him how to handle adversity, fight for game time, and deal with situations like relegation battles. He views these setbacks as positive influences that shaped his mentality and prepared him for his current position.

His elder brother, Daniel, a therapist who has previously worked with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge and Cobham, has also been a significant source of guidance. Daniel’s insights have helped Rogers navigate the increased scrutiny that came with establishing himself as a Premier League player and representing England, including at this summer’s World Cup. Rogers highlighted the importance of mental well-being for players, emphasizing that disappointment affects them like anyone else.

Impact and future at Chelsea

Rogers’ arrival is a significant acquisition for Chelsea, representing one of the most notable purchases since BlueCo’s four-year reign began. Co-owner Behdad Eghbali had previously indicated the club’s intention to target players who could help challenge for the title, following a season where the team finished 10th and was eliminated from the Champions League last 16.

The versatile forward, who can play multiple attacking roles, enjoyed a rapid ascent at Villa Park after joining from Middlesbrough in January 2024. He contributed to Villa’s top-four finish and qualification for the Europa League last season, scoring 31 times in 125 appearances under Unai Emery. Rogers is the fourth signing for Chelsea this summer, following defender Marco Palestra, striker Emmanuel Emegha, and winger Geovany Quenda, as the club overhauls its squad.
